GPU Fan

Post by coacharnold »

Hi folks .....

I have a version of the XBOX that has a GPU fan. I have taken in out and oiled it and made all manner of effort to get it quite and it is STILL loud. It's working fine, just loud. I just learned that older versions of xbox didn't have GPU fans.

Question: If I'm only running XBMC... can I remove the GPU fan all together.

Thanks

Tim

I have a v1.0 box with no gpu fan, and it's been running like that (xbmc only) for about 2 years with no problems. I took it off 'cos it was noisy.
I did mean to put a (bigger) heatsink from a later box on it, but it's not been a problem so it's never going to happen.
That's not a guarantee though. ;)

Other way round, newer versions didn't have a GPU fan.

Yep, it'll be fine. Well unless you live somewhere hot, but even then it'll probably be fine.

GPU fan in 1.0 Xbox can be removed, but it's recommended to put new thermal compound. I suggest to replace main fan with 80mm one also.
