Request for suggestions, pick psu for mini xbox

Hi guys, first post so go easy on me

I have been planning to build a mini Xbox and have been looking at other peoples builds to figure out how to do it. Most people when ditching the power supply will drop in this guy...

...and don't have any problems. But technically when using this, the 5v supply is being over taxed on the 5v line since it seems that the Xbox draws almost 13 amps when running. So i wanted to go another root and try something different.

I would like to use the 120 watt pico psu from the same site, but then take the 12v line off of the psu, split it, send one branch to the board, send the other to a step down drains former/buck converter to drop it down to 5v and connect it to the board one of of the required board connections.

Since the Xbox only uses 4 amps when running, and most of that is the dvd/hdd drives, I should be technically able to share the amp load on the 12v rail. I just don't know if splitting the line like this is safe or even a worth while idea.

Should I just go with the tried and tested or is this idea worth pursuing?

Just a thought, if you use a solid state HDD (presumably with an IDE-SATA coverter) does that significantly reduce the current demand on the 5v rail ?
