Introduction and question about UPnP AV Rendering

Post by tensionxbmc »

Hi folks!! This is my first time here so please be gentle ;)

I have been using XBMC for XBOX since discovering it in 2009. I believe I am running version 1.

Everything is working fine with it, using TVersity as a media server.

I have recently acquired a projector, and have been using that with the XBOX.

After reading extensively online I have discovered that I should be able to use XBMC as a dumb AV rendering device, but.cannot seem to get this to work. I am trying to use MediaHouse for android as a remote control. I have set PLAY FROM as the TVersity server, and PLAY TO as XBMC to no avail. MediaHouse reports that the device doea not support remote playing of media. I am unable to determine if this is a problem with MediaHouse or XBMC.

I know that the remote app is available, downloaded it from a link on this forum and it works well, but I want to be able to select media from my phone without having to navigate the XMBC menus.

I believe everything is set up correctly. I can play audio/video from TVersity to MediaHouse, and from TVersity to XBMC, but not from TVersity > MediaHouse > XBMC

Would updating to 3.2 solve the problem?

Please help as I am at the end of my tether.

Not sure what the issue is on your end (possibly network related) but I have confirmed that TVersity>MediaHouse>XBMC do work together.

Test setup
1) TVersity Pro 2.3 on an old Thinkpad
2) Enabled UPnP on XBMC 3.2 Stable Release via System>Settings>Network>Services>tick Allow control of XBMC via UPnP
3) MediaHouse on a rooted NookColor
4) Making selections & streaming DivX files via 802.11g

MediaHouse detected both the NC and Xbox almost instantaneously. It did take awhile (approx. 5 min) for MediaHouse to eventually detect TVersity (default settings). Bottom line, I can "Play From" TVersity>MediaHouse (making selections)>"Play To" XBMC fine.

Thanks very much for testing that for me!!

I am going to try to update the Xbox to 3.2 and I will be back to report my findings.

Thanks again :)

P.S. I have read several different methods for updating. Is there any way I can Boot the Xbox from a 3.2 install disk or something as I would like to wipe the previous installation completely in case something is wrong with it??

There is no bootable CD installer for XBMC4Xbox. I'm running 4 different builds (Stable, Nightly, Jan's, old SVN) on the same partition w/o any issues. Use "How to Update via FTP" under Guides and Tutorials or FTP zipped XBMC folder>unzip using File Manager as suggested by Jan , choice is yours.

Thanks, followed the guide but I am unable to find the original XBMC folder (which contains the old installation) anywhere on the xbox.

I have FTP'd the UnleashX folder to E:\Apps folder (which was originally empty)

I have downloaded the 3.2 stable zip file, but dont know where to put the contents.

Sorry for all the questions, but I have searched all over the web before i've asked on here, and I do appreciate your help!

Does your Xbox not boot directly into (old) XBMC? If so, it must be under E: or E:\Apps (which you found empty)

Yes it boots into th eold XBMC, but there is no XMBC folder that I can see anywhere, and E:\Apps was empty.

Very strange...

Could the files for the old installation be in E:\dash? They seem very similar...

If so, do I delete everything off the E:\ drive?

I would NOT delete anything off E:\ for the time being. If your current/old XBMC contents are in fact sitting under E:\Dash, then you would need to transfer over the updated XBMC folder while keeping the exact file structure. Watch that video guide "Update XBMC4Xbox via FTP" to fully grasp the process of a) transferring over the updated XBMC content while under another dashboard, Error Recovery Mode, DVD2Xbox or similar environments b) renaming old/new "XBMC" folders accordingly. As said earlier, I'm keeping 4 different XBMC builds under E:\ so I could switch between them as needed.

Ok, I got it working.

I extracted the files from the 3.2 stable zip file to a folder I called "dash"

From Filezilla, I attempted to delete the E:\dash folder, The log file and the skins folder did not delete (I assume they were still in use as I was using XBMC at the time.)

I copied the contents of the "dash" folder into the (mostly now empty) E:\dash folder via Filezilla.

All files copied successfully, rebooted via the XBMC interface.

Bingo, it worked!! :)

Thanks for all your help guys ;)
