Trouble with old Virgin cable modem letting XBMC see shares

Post by defdex »

Hey all,

This setup of my sisters is the bane of my xbmc experience... I can't get the bloody thing to find the shares off the pc.

The setup is that she's using an old Virgin cable modem (model no E08C007) which has one ethernet connection. This ethernet lead goes to the onboared ethernet connection on the pc. I've then got a second NIC installed on a PCI slot, which connects via ethernet back to the xbox. This usually works a dream, but every once in a while, Virgin has a system cockup which puts us all out of order for a couple days, then when the connecition comes back, she's lost all ability to access the shares on the pc.

xbmc isn't picking up an ip addy on the unleashx dash or inside xbmc.

This is the info for the internet connection:

Physical Address: 00-15-58-98-6A-F8
IP Address: 82.21.26.145
Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway: 82.21.24.1
DHCP Server: 62.253.131.61
Lease Obtained: 08/10/2012 12:35:33
Lease Expires: 10/10/2012 14:35:55
DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100, 194.168.8.100
WINS Server:

The xbox connection states that it's 'connected' but i have no joy in either ftping to the box, or getting the box to find the pc.
Here's the info for the xbox connection:
Physical Address: 00-50-FC-A9-87-D9
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server:

Any help? I'm really floundering here, and I'd rather be at home playing Borderlands :P

I don't see how your Xbox was able to connect in the first place especially with that IP (static or DHCP?). These are your options
1) Obtain a router (highly recommended)

Below methods (w/o a router) require a cross-over cable between PC & Xbox. Google for your respective OS as needed
2) Use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

3) Use Bridge Connections

I also highly recommend using a router. Besides greatly simplifying network setup for situations like these, having a computer directly exposed to the internet is a huge security risk. There have even been viruses that automatically infect computers directly exposed to the internet that are stopped by routers because routers can't be infected in the same way. Even if you only have one computer connected to the router, having a router is a MUCH better idea than not having a router, and the fact that you'd like to also put your Xbox on the network makes using a router a no-brainer.

Thanks Immortal n Kitana. I gave up in the end, and instead spent an hour on the phone to virgin, with a bit of serious blagging and charming, I managed to swing her a freebie router, which should be turning up today. So all will hopefully be hunky dory in a few hours. Cheers for the responses though. x
