I softbricked my xbox trying to update xbmc. Is there a fix?

Post by Pinesal »

So I was using ftp to copy over the new xbmc files and for some reason, the ftp couldn't remain connected during the transfer. I turned off the power to reset the xbox, knowing that it would probably damage it and that's what happened. Now when I turn on the xbox, it says it requires service and to call customer support.

Is there another way to copy the files onto the hard drive?

EDIT: I partially fixed it by creating an install disc called Slayers EvoX Auto Installer 2.7. The Xbox boots now but I'm not getting all the menu options I should have. Still looking into it.

You can hook the drive up to a PC and use a FATX file explorer like Xplorer360 to copy files. FATX though has several limitations in terms of what characters can be in filenames, how long filenames can be, and things like that that I'm not sure if Xplorer360 handles.

I use FTP primarily and would recommend sticking with that. Were you by chance replacing XBMC files while using XBMC? If so, don't do that. If you need to update XBMC over FTP, switch to a different dashboard first, connect through FTP, and only then should you change XBMC's files. Otherwise, XBMC could crash on you part way through the copying process because it's using the files that you're trying to replace. I'm surprised you got an error screen when you were done though, most of the time it will just go to a black screen for me or XBMC's safemode when booting after doing that.

Although I do not know how to solve this, using the built-in XBMC update add-on works error free and should not cause the problem you are experiencing.
