Atari 520 ST skip rescue

Just rescued this bad boy from a skip





Anyone know much about them ? Its got a floppy drive in the side and two black dongles for a mouse and joystick but it didn't come with them unfortunately .

I believe it was Atari`s competition to the mighty Commodore Amiga 500. It has a massive collection of games
and from what i can remember was great for music utilities for all budding beat boys back in the day. I`m sure
google and other members will have a more nostalgic and informative description, in my book, its a keeper worth
saving from any skip....the retro gods salute you!

Been on your Easter holls BuZz yep , I was pleasantly surprised when I plugged it in and it started up no bother , it came with no stick or mouse so will have to source those to test it further .
I must say it is a beast of a thing , really solid and robust weighs a tonne , its very far removed from the ZX Spectrum I had from a few years before this .
It is now in safe hands after its near death experience and I will give it the TLC and either keep it or pass it on at some point .

It's a good machine for sure - but not as good as an Amiga 500

I just had a look at your Retro PI forum BuZzard. Nice work. Just wanted to mention I have thousands of arcade parts suitable for the tables and bar top versions you guys are making not to mention about 50 title headers from the original arcade cabinets. As for joysticks and buttons, only genuine Taito Japan and MCA ones. Both these styles are no longer available. The Taitos stopped in the 80s and it was their manufacturing costs that killed them. They are still regarded as some of the most precise, light weight controllers made and MCA went Chinese in the late 90s but these were the best although the Taitos were a bit of an overkill with heaps of parts making up a controller but who cares when you have spares like I do I guess. Most complaints of these controllers were related to the main bearing being worn out from excessive use between servicing but this was also in the golden years of Street Fighter and all the arcade games you guys are playing when total game plays per week were in the 1000s so I would regard them as life time in house hold use before such wear would start to become an issue. Anyway, don't hesitate on asking for some hard to find if not impossible parts you guys may require. These parts were often supplied to me free of charge, I simply started collecting them and storing them. Just a reminder, you are making replica machines I have spent my lifetime working on the original arcade versions of. The genuine mother boards from these machines are always in demand and sell at a good price but parts, I would have great pleasure supplying you guys with if you have a need for any. Thanks for sharing an interest we are both involved in.

@BuZz , great work on retro Pi it works great on the Pi 2 but will retire that soon for a 3 , I'm using it on a triple boot distro someone made up on the Pi forums
I am on the scrounge for the last Mint build you did for the Joggler if you get time to fish one out , I asked over on the Joggler forums : I love it when you are quiet as this means you are working on your next project .

@xman , thanks for that info on all your spares , will need a cabinet for my cave at some point but not just yet , am sure to remember your kind offer when the time comes .....
By the way I always look forward to your project posts on here .

I don't think I have the mint image still, and it's ancient (I may have it on backup somewhere, but not on the site). I thought I replied - but you would do better to get the server version and install the "Mate" desktop on top perhaps ?
