Back-Row Skin

Post by Coldly-Indifferent »

Has anyone here fixed any of the multiple faults the Back-Row skin has to at least make it usable?

I ask because I didn't realise just how bad the the problems were after having it on various Xboxes but not testing it out as a possible alternative if I ever get bored of my preferred XBMC skin. I haven't.

But I've done a bit of testing now and with XBMC versions ranging from the current v3.5.1 to one dating back to v9.04 circa 2008. The latter is far better with the skin but still won't, even with repeated reloads, display Programs, Music, Emulators or let me add them as new sources. On v3.5.1 it freezes regularly and once you click on a category header it only allows you to scroll horizontally.

This means you can't use any of the menus and in any case some of those seem to be missing key features. Not being able to change the skin back to a working one could be a serious problem too for some people if they start messing with this skin on their main dash install. Don't.

So in this state it is obviously totally unusable which is shame because otherwise it seems like a pretty decent and practical skin with good, sensibly simple menu navigation (if it worked).

Another question: is there a list here or anywhere of skins that work with recent version of XBMC4Xbox? Even if linking to the downloads is not allowed (is it allowed?) I might at least be able to avoid wasting my time trying to find skins that won't work or have serious issues.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the response.

A few months back you did some very helpful work on resolving the minor display problems in Classic-Xbox skin (my skin of choice) with > v3.00 XBMC4Xbox.

Back-Row, at least the version I now have, as I've only just discovered, has issues with XBMC4Xbox versions dating back to at least 2008 XBMC v9.04. These range from the minor to the major, too many to list.

I'm not sure what skin versions I've used, I'll have to check but over the years I've installed skin sets from different souces and often just let them replace the skins I already had.

That has been a mistake in some cases eg. the Basics-101 skin version I had on all my Xboxes. I actually uninstalled because I thought it didn't work with current XBMC4Xbox versions and even advised others about that in passing on various Xbox forums. But recently I re-downloaded Basics-101 from somewhere else and much to my surprise found does work.

My general skin archive is based on stuff included in various AID Addon packs so that is probably where the version of Back-Row I was using came from too. I re-downloaded it from a different source only last week when I belatedly became aware of Back-Row's problems. Maybe I've just been unlucky and they're all the same version. :(

If I can find out the version I'm currently using I'll post but unless you can point me at an updated one without the problems I'm really not sure it is worth your time trying to fix it. Assuming I am using a good copy of the most up to date version there seems to be a hell of a lot to do and it should be pretty obvious the what's wrong if you install it.

I have checked and the one I downloaded and also the one I had used previous were both Back-Row v2.1 according to the accompanying skin.xml.

Anything you can do to get it working would be much appreciated but please don't treat this as an important matter, particularly if you're working on sorting out other skin problems.

EDIT: 17.09.15

Just been playing about with other skins and found that Clearity (shown as v2.1 in the skin.xml) has a very similar problem to that one I described earlier with Back-Row.

If you go into settings in any of the main menu categories ie. Appearance, Settings, Network etc you can only move horizontally through the sub-menu header categories. You can't actually click down to enter each menu's contents and alter them. That means, of course, you can't change the skin. This could cause any unwary user some problems.

I'll check later my XBMC4Xbox version archive to see just how far back this problem has existed uncorrected or whether it is just with v3.5.1.

As a matter of suggestion, it is good practice to provide and link to a debug logs, whilst debug mode is enabled, when running skins that are not working with xbmc4xbox. Simply explaining what your encounter as an "issue" isn't practical since not everyone will experience the same issue at the same time. The debug log, however, will show incorrect animation conditions, animations, ( nonexistent ) window id', built-in functions or translations, etc....

To be honest I don't know anything about debug logs so if it could be explained how to create one or where to find it if it is created automatically it would be very helpful. Thanks.

I was actually going through XBMC looking for reference to it yesterday and found where the Debug Log option is and that it is set to off by default.

If I have reason to I'll know how to provide one now so thanks for the information.
