Floppy disk drive on Xbox?

Post by nidge »

Ok I know, a pointless project  why would you want to use a floppy disk on an Xbox?
One use I could see for using a FDD, is with Amiga emulation, wouldn't it be cool if you could play Amiga games from the original floppy disks on WinUAEX.
I seem to remember that PC disk drives couldn't read Amiga disks, although my old tower Amiga could read DOS floppy disks?

I have a USB FDD that I've conected to my Xbox through a USB to controller port adaptor.
XBMC4xbox comes up with unable to mount memory unit, the Xbox dashboard just flashes, and the drive makes a noise in time to the flashing?
UnleashX doesn't recoginise it all.
Linux recognises and loads at boot up, but I don't seem to be able to find the disk on the desktop, maybe because I'm not that fluent with Linux?

I can't see a way of making an Amiga emulator read anything other than ADF's. I can get WinUAE (on PC) to read CD's and DVD's and even real hard drives, just not floppy disks?

There would be very few flopy disks left these days that dont have the rot these days.

best idea is to buy a catwezel and copy them to adf images on your pc then transfer them to your xbox hdd, if you dont have a real amiga that is.

I note Linux support for kernels v2.6 onwards - which excludes XBOX Linux, with v2.4 kernels.

I still have some working floppy disks, PC High Density ones, not Amiga Single Density :) EDIT: Double Density, early Atari ST's had SD floppy drives ;)
ie: 1.44mb and 720kb respectivly, although I seem to remember it was 1.74mb and 880kb on an Amiga?

a catwesel on the pc is a pci card to interface an Amiga disk drive to a pc, winuae supports them for reading of native disks under emulation, and for archival purposes.

of note double sided disks are unreliable on the Amiga standard drive, there are special is 1.7mb drives but they rotate at 150 rpm not 300 like a pc one, this makes them reliable as the paula chip cant keep up with the speed required to write/read the disks at the normal speed.
