Can't Download Anything

Sorry new here and have looked around for a while and can't find anything to help me so far so I'm making this. I just got a modded Xbox running xbmc and I can't get it to download anything that I want. When I got it the HDD was filled with movies and I've seen other people on Youtube, etc. that have old school emulators but I can't seem to get anything like that. I've spent loads of time on this and can't get it to do anything but update the time automatically. I would like to get apps, some emulators and some way to back up my games and dvds to the hard drive. I've seen these online but no tutorials that work for what I have. The problem is on everything I see or read it wants me to enter in fusion or something similar in System<File Manager" which I can do. But after everything wants me to go to Systems<Settings<Add Ons<Install from Zip File, which I don't have, to actually do the download. I don't have a System tab and settings doesn't have anything called Add Ons in it, File Manager is on its own at the bottom of my home screen. Is there another way to do it for the version I'm running (don't know which) or am I making some idiotic mistake? This may be somewhere else or may be me making some dumb mistake but I'm new at this and would really like some help. Sorry my problem is book length and thanks to anyone who tries to help.

your book as you call it needs some formatting it's all squashed up with out spaces and is kind of hard to read but.....

Sounds like you have a really restrictive skin and or possibly a very old version of xbmc.

By chance can you take a picture when it is loaded up and post it on the forum ?

When the xbmc loads you can press down some buttons on the controller and reset the settings and skin to default that may help if there is a stuff up somewhere.

There is also another combo that loads up in a safe mode where you can fix or replace/upgrade xbmc using ftp if by chance things dont work properly.

First thing i would do is update xbmc4xbox using ftp.

what you would do is copy on xbmc then run it from the file manager from your current version of xbmc then ftp again over the top of your old version updating it.

What you will need is a pc and install a ftp client such as filezilla so you can connect your xbox to your pc with a network cable and replace xbmc on your xbox.

You can get xbmc from bakedpie's thread in the development section of this forum.

Xbmc wont play roms and as such you need to install emulators to do that.

emulators and homebrew can be found on xbins and to make things simple auto_xbins is what you want to download you can download emulators and such from xbins using that program.

You can use dvd2xbox to back up your games you can find that on xbins also.

There is plenty of info on the net you just neeed yo do some searching and reading.

an auto installer dvd like Hexen, AID or Slayers could be a solution also to updating the xbox and installing the basics

If you go to the link my home screen looks like the picture at the top which reads 23:37 as the time. It was the second img on Google but looks exactly like mine.

I bought this Xbox from someone hoping to save some difficulty in the modding process which really isn't my type of thing. He said he modded it a few years ago and hasn't used it in a couple years. The apps that are on it right now are dated to September of 2010 if that matters.

It is an older skin that was the standard some time ago.

you just need to install some apps and update xbmc, by the looks of it.

download xbmc4xbox 3.5 stable from here:

then download filezilla for your pc and install it.

plug your xbox and pc together with a network cable.

if your xbox is set to dhcp it should get an ip address from your router and you can view this in the system info section in xbmc.

load up filezilla and set up a new server connection and type in the ip address details you found earlier it will be in the format:
192.168.1.5 or something simular and use "xbox" as the user name and password.

click connect and if all goes well you should be presented with a drive list on your xbox.

from there you wasnt to find where xbmc is installed.

then you can copy on your new version of xbmc4xbox in a new folder along side your original version of xbmc dont put it in the same folder or you will bust something.

from then you can go into the file manager and load up the new version.

once it is loaded up you can rename the old folder where your original version is installed from file manager then boot it up and rename the new version to the same as the original versions name.

after that you can reboot and you will be presented with a new version.

As said above you will get them from xbins there is a web site for release info here:

You can look what is there but you must download using auto xbins 2008 by ground zero you can find it here:

Please read up about Xbins or you will likely end up with a ban basically everything you will want will be on there.

The alternative to the individual emulators is Retroarch and Coinops both are an all in one multi emulator, Coinops you wont find on xbins, as it is housed by private servers and underground torrent sites.

Anyone know how exactly I can get anything from Xbins? They say something about finding their "our room" but where and how would I find that and send them the password they want?

As I said two times previously, download auto xbins it is the easy way to download from xbins.

xbins is a private ftp server with passwords, to get the password you need to join their chat room in IRC and ask for a password and the bot replys with a password, you can then type the password into the ftp server to get files this password only works once to aviod hammering.
the xbins room is hosted on the efnet server.

But again Auto xbins does this all automatically you just click on the program it does its thing then you download files and browse around the server for all the stuff you want.

it can be found in other places if you look hard enough but this is the official place it is all kept.

Yep, auto xbins works well.

Beware of Windows removing the exe or antivirus flagging it as a virus/IRC bot. It isn't dangerous, the program needs to use the functions.
