X2 Chip Fried?
Had an x2 on a 1.4 box, yesterday i cleaned the box and put the chip back in. today i turned it on, it then did 2 restarts and a frag. i opened the box, and found i had accidentally put the chip on the header, one row of pins closer to the ide port than it should have. am i screwed, did i fry the chip? or did it drop the bios? or what?

Does the Xbox boot with your chip removed? If it does, then you killed your chip. If not, then you killed your Xbox.

yeah the box boots to an e21 (use modchip 1click install, messed up the MS dash, gonna reformat to my softmod backup, thank god i had an eeprom backup, or i would have just lost a 70 dollar, 300 gig hard drive(it was locked))AZImmortal wrote:Does the Xbox boot with your chip removed? but the chip turns on, and the front panel light does too, then the box and chip turn off, then on, off, on and frag

This is why I mentioned in another thread that you should run your hard drives unlocked when hardmodded. It's always easy to lock it if you need to, but you're screwed if it's locked and you're in a situation like this without an EEPROM backup (unless you want to build an EEPROM reader).GhostlyGamer wrote:thank god i had an eeprom backup, or i would have just lost a 70 dollar, 300 gig hard drive(it was locked)

Re: X2 Chip Fried?
You might want to start doing what I do, which is to flash the TSOP even if a chip is installed. That way, even if the chip fails, you can still rely on the flashed TSOP.

Re: X2 Chip Fried?
Have you tried the chip in another machine?. Could of upset your solder joints in the cleaning process resulting in the frag. Being to rough with the D0 wire can result in a break inside the insulation if it is single core wire. I'm saying these checks because I did the same one pin out on an Aladdin and all it did was stuff the loaded bios which I was able to reload. I'd personally grab some more chips as they do come in handy and at $7, pretty hard to go wrong. I'm not a real fan of Duoxs as there the only chips that have ever given my troubles getting corrupted bioses after working fine for some time.

I agree with Xman, check your D0 wire on the board and the chip first. Double check and make sure you've got it the chip sitting on the pins correctly.

did both. I thought that it may have just dropped the bios because of it, but i dont have a programmer to test it

Re: X2 Chip Fried?
also i looked at the traces, and i loaded 5 volts into the flash rom, but other rthan that, there is no physical damage that would indicate otherwise

Re: X2 Chip Fried?
If you have another LPC modchip, then you can install it, turn on your Xbox, and then while the Xbox is still running, uninstall it and install your 2.6 and then see if you can flash it. You don't need to worry about the hdd/lan wires.
