Modchip surprise .

Post by hawsey »

Trawling through my pile of xboxes , the one that I thought booted fine and had not been modified held a secret :0).
After seeing the gunge that leaked out of the other xbox,s capacitor , I decided to take out this one , luckily it was in the early stages of goo spread when examined after yanking it out .
Whilst in there however I found a red modchip in the same place as others I have seen , after googling ,it might be an aladdin I think .

It would not boot HeXen so I thought it was unmodified, my question is what to do now ?

Might it be that the disc wasn't recognised or maybee the chip is caput ,

Could I softmod this xbox still or is that a no no ?

I can try another dvd player I know HeXen works in to answer my first question ( On Friday ) .
Thanks

You can always softmod it at any time, take a picture of the chip as it sits and post it up. Xman is the Alladin king and I bet he can help alot just from the picture.

I'd bet on the chip working and the DVD drive being dirty / broken.

What do you see when it boots up? What colour is the LED when the dash boots? Can you boot a retail game?

A bit more progress on this one , I tried HeXen again and another copy disc and both came up disk not recognised , retail disc booting fine so I swapped the dvd drive for the samsung one out of the xbox which needs the eeprom .
Same result so I was about to go down the route of possible softmod when I remembered someting about pushing eject and power on for some chips ,so this I tried and hey presto the light went orange and an evoX emblem came up with the microsoft and xbox logos .
I then put in HeXen and it boots up in to that just fine , so far so good .
Now the questions lol
I am not sure what chip this is , so how would I go about a fresh install with a bigger drive ?just as before ?
It will be a 120 gb hdd .
I would like the chip just to stay switched on so it will boot xbmc without the two button press, will HeXen just do that ?
Cheers .

It's an Aladdin XT (XenoChip) 4032/4064

http://www.xbox-scene.com/modchips3b_table.htm

HeXEn can't fix how it boots - that will require some soldering to permanently enable the chip.

You might not need to reflash the chip. Run Evox or XBMC or BiosChecker, see which BIOS they say the Xbox is running. If that doesn't work, try running XBPartitioner 1.1 or later, see if it complains about LBA448 support.

That BIOS is fine, no reflashing needed.

Try booting with a long press on the power button.

Great thanks, I am going to try the soldering thing when I have a look as I want to be able to just switch the xbox on and straight in to Xbmc :-D

Hold on a second. I just reread your previous post, and we may have more work to do. You need to run XBPartitioner after booting your normal dash, not after booting HeXEn.

You should also try the long press on the power button before resorting to resoldering. :)

Just had a chance to look at this one again , think I worked it out ,
When I just push the power button I get normal boot , green leds.
Push and hold power button then a big red evoX in the top left corner but then xbox dash , orange leds .
It doesn't seem to boot in to anything other than the xbox dash unless I put HeXen in .
Is this it ready for my 160 gig hdd upgrade do you think ?
Thanks in advance .

Yes, but you still need to run XBPartitioner again without booting HeXEn first, just to confirm that the BIOS on the chip supports LBA48.

There is something not right with it , it now will only boot in to normal xbox mode with green leds .
When I try a long press of the power as I was doing before I get orange leds but nothing on the screen !! Can't get HeXen to boot at all now lol arghhh

Swap the DVD drive with one you know works. Boot with HeXEn, copy unleashx to C:\evoxdash.xbe, reboot normally (long press). You can then run XBPartitioner to check the BIOS.

An update, I think the chip has died or lost its settings .
It won't boot heXen at all now , short press on power gets ms dash .
Long press gets flash red then solid orange but no video output on screen .
Push eject and power gets flashing red and orange lights .
I tried to ftp with solid orange but no luck , I have not tried ftp with flashing red orange .
I also tried a 160 gb hdd built on another xbox with Hexen but it won't boot.
What are my options please
Cheers .
Oh and I am using the dvd drive that I know works fine.

So this xbox had an aladdin chip but at the moment wont boot Hexen or anything other than xbox dash.
Could I softmod it and then try recover the chip from there? Or would that not be good?
I saw something in another thread about soldering points on the chip, might something like that work here?
Tonight before anything else I will try boot hexen again but failing that what options do I have?
Cheers
