changed router, now can't connect to network-SOLVED

Post by bsell1 »

My router that was attached to my xbox quit working the other day, so I bought a new one. The problem is that while the router appears to be working perfectly, the xbox can no longer connect to my network, meaning I can no longer play movies and games sitting on my PC. The weird part is, the xbox is getting to the internet, as the weather and RSS feeds work just fine. Anybody have any clue what I may be doing wrong here?

have you tried to add a new source as the ip adress of the pc may of changed if dhcp is in use.
you may need to do unset client isolation in the router or open up port 445 to enable smb to operate or disable the firewall all together.

yes, I tried to add a new source, but it just said it could not connect to the network. How do I open up port 445?

Login to your router and open up the port. You should give us more information as to the equipment as all routers are different.

This is a TP-LINK wireless N router. My setup is as follows: WinXP computer with a Trendnet router(primary). From the Trendnet router a cable runs to the living room and connects to the TP-LINK which gives me wireless in the back of the house as well as hooking up the Xbox and PS2. I had another Trendnet connected in the living room but it quit working. It was hooked up the same way except that instead of hooking up the cable from the primary to the WAN port, it was hooked up to one of the LAN ports of the Xbox router. This system worked great for several years, until the router quit working. Now, when I hooked up the new TP-LINK, it would only get the internet if I connected the primary network cable to the WAN port.

Once again, the new router gets the internet to the Living room and into the Xbox, but I am unable to connect to the house network through this setup, like I was able to before. Any help would be appreciated.

Turn off the setting in the TP Link to distribute IP addresses (Turn off DHCP addressing in that router). That way the primary router passes out IP addresses and allows the network to truncate onto itself rather than negotiating with a host on a separate network. This could remove a conflict of similar IP on the network, and may potentially solve your issue. What happens if you move the xbox to another part of the house that runs off of the Trendnet only, and not the TP-Link? I have a TL-WR941ND, so I can assure you that configuring it is relatively easy.
