I'm having a hard time pulling up the right search results that pinpoint an answer. I understand that optimistically it may work as a DVD drive only but blu-ray discs wouldn't be usable at all, but Is it possible to use a blu-ray drive and have it be usable by Cromwell? Some of these drive are compatible with Windows 98, which blu-ray as a format wasn't invented until 2000.
Also I'm about to buy a laptop DVD drive online to install into a w.i.p. and wanted to ask if there are there any particular drives that would be more preferable for their ability to interface with the Xbox specifically or is it similar to hard drives where most common types will work fine?

Re: Laptop Drive / Blu-ray Question
Hi mate, check out my thread on making the xbox sleeker.
I used a toshiba/samsung slot load sata dvd drive.
As with any pc drive you really need to get bring/modify the correct signals from the drive to interface with the yellow dvd drive cable.
I first tried with a liteon slot loader but it was impossible to operate and get to the circuit board to logic probe any signals (apart from eject).
Even with the tosh/sammy It was a bloody nightmare but possible and I got some usuable signals but needed to build a circuit to delay and invert some others, now works great. Boots everything bar the usual original games and recognises all drive states.(eject, tray out/in cd in/out) linux boots fine from cd/dvd. Linux recognises the dvd drive model/serial number etc as does avalaunch and such.
If you only need to use xbmc you can add the pcdvdrom=true option to advancedsettings.xml and do without the yellow cable but every few seconds xbmc front end freezes while it checks to see if a disc has changed and what's in the drive (auto play function wont work with this either)

Re: Laptop Drive / Blu-ray Question
I hadn't considered a slot loading drive. That would be pretty slick actually. Could I ask what you used in your build? I just checked out the whole thread and loved the pics. That thing's a beast.

So what needs to be done to that drive to make it work? As far as the tray state and such goes. A slot loading drive would be pretty sleek
