Identify Xbox Version Via XBMC?

Post by yellowsnow4free »

Hey guys,

I have a very quick question here.

I noticed on XBMC today that under system info it says what version my Xbox is.

Is this correct? Judging by my serial number it seems correct, but I haven't read much online about using software to check your Xbox version (every place says to open it up).

I think AID, SID, and HeXEn have a similar feature, but I'm not 100% sure if they're accurate.

Thank you! :D

Yep, the only fool-proof method is opening it up. Serial number is fairly reliable, though. Interpreting the data in serial number will tell you a whole bunch about date and place of manufacture. But a good guideline for version is simply date:

http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/XboxVersionTable

The manufacturing date (MFG. DATE) is in international format : year-month-day
If the manufacturing date is prior August 2002 : you have a v1.0
If the manufacturing date is August 2002 or later : probably a v1.1 (but v1.0 is still possible (MS factory refurbished)).
If the manufacturing date is December 2002 or later : probably v1.2 or v1.3 (but v1.0/v1.1 is still possible (MS factory refurbished))
If the manufacturing date is 15 July 2003 or later : probably v1.4 (but v1.0/v1.1/v1.2/v1.3 is still possible (MS factory refurbished))
If the manufacturing date is 01 August 2003 or later : probably v1.5 or v1.4 (but v1.0/v1.1/v1.2/v1.3 is still possible (MS factory refurbished))
If the manufacturing date is 19 March 2004 or later : probably v1.6
If the manufacturing date is 13 September 2004 or later : probably v1.6b

Thanks for the reply spicemuseum!

Yeah, I've done the serial number method and so far it checks out with what XBMC says.

I know opening it up is the most accurate way, but since I'm dealing with modded Xboxes, isn't there an accurate way to check it without opening it?

Looking online for a little bit I found a program called "Xbox Version Detector", and I noticed a few utilities like AID, SID and HeXEn display which Xbox version you have. I was just curious how accurate these methods are.

HeXEn, AID and SID all use the UnleashX dash, which has a built-in Xbox version detection function. To be honest, I have no idea how it works in detail, but I've not seen any reports of it giving the wrong answer. I suspect it might struggle with things like the mythical 1.5 (simply because the devs wouldn't have had a 1.5 to test, and because the if the 1.5 exists at all it seems to be a 1.4 with a couple of motherboard traces cut, and therefore probably not detectable via a program) but otherwise I suspect it's quite reliable.

I'm sure a quick trawl through the XBMC source code would reveal how it does it, so you can see make a judgement about how reliable you think it is. I'd be surprised if XBMC used a completely different set of detection methods from UnleashX.

Thanks Heimdall!

I'm with you; I'm betting AID, HeXEn, SID, and XBMC all use similar method(s) to determine the Xbox version.

I mentioned it before, but has anyone triedXbox Version Detector? I've only seen it mentioned a couple times in forums.

When it isn't so cold in my game room I'll see what version AID, HeXEn, SID, and Xbox Version Detector say my Xbox is; I'm pretty sure it's a 1.6 (XBMC confirmed this).

I've worked on a few Xboxes for friends and I wanted to check if they're 1.6 or not, just in case they need their clock capacitors removed. But if I can find out without opening them up that would be nice :)

Rip it apart and give it a long over due dusting out as well I say. Better to clean it out and see what model it is inside than have a virgin, unopened Xbox that has fried because it has an inch of dust over everything inside. Not like you'll loose you warranty or anything is it?.

I'm not betting. I'm telling you for a fact that HeXEn and the most recent versions of AID and SID all do it in exactly the same way, so they'll all give you the same answer! :)

I've never tried Xbox Version Detector....
