But of a weird question - I've heard you can't put a 1.0-1.5 xbox into a 1.6 case without removing a bit of RF shielding underneath the motherboard. Aside from that, I thought everything else can be swapped with eachother (ignoring psu's)
I've got a green halo xbox case that I think had a 1.2 motherboard in it. I'm putting a 1.4 motherboard into the case but it doesnt quite sit right - the corner of the motherboard near the front, nearest to contollor port 1, doesnt sit flat. Also, one of the holes next to the LPC header doesnt line up although all the other holes do.
It's all working, I've just not screwed the corner of the motherboard right down and have let it sat proud - Will this be ok or am I imminently going to short something out on the board? Or have I got it wrong; do green xbox cases typically have a 1.6 motherboard?
Cheers

Re: swapping motherboards & cases
I have a motherboard sitting in the wrong casing, there's a free hole, no problems so far

Re: swapping motherboards & cases
there is only 2 model of cases. v1.0 to v1.5 and v1.6.
You should be able put a v1.0-v1.5 in a v1.6 case with no mod, but if you do the opposite (v1.6 mobo in a v1.0-1.5 case) you will kill the motherboard very shortly.
Personally I only put them in their respective cases, no mixing.
There is a regulator on v1.6 mobo exactly where is a hole at the same spot on other model. So it push and break the regulator.
If you would want to use a v1.6 mobo in a v1.0-1.5 case you would need to cut the screw stand where there is no hole on the v1.6 mobo.

Thats useful to know - cheers for clearing that up. I had heard about killing boards with wrong cases and since my motherbaord doesnt sit quite right in the case I just wanted to check, but everything seems to work as it should anyway

Re: swapping motherboards & cases
XPH is correct except for one aspect. Should you fit a 1.6 mother board in any other case without grinding back the unused board standoff used in every model except 1.6s, (located right about in the middle towards the back of the board), and either chop or bend the RF shield where it goes over this standoff, it will flex the board which isn't real good but as soon as you power the machine up, the RF shield, (ground), will short to the 5vDC coming out of the regulator that is mounted on the board at this exact location and definitely blow it. Without this 5vDC, the Xbox is bricked until you replace it which isn't a nice job.
Have a good read of this and where to get the regs when you blow them.......http://llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/1.6_Xbox_no_power.htm
