It's a 2 part. First a base coat of Dupli-Color "Metalcast" Ground Coat which I found was best applied using a normal spray technical and to finish it off, invert the can so it sprays dry and applies heaps of metal particles that standup in the wet coat.. You wait for that to dry and then for the red, it is the same brand and type of paint but is the top coat color. First a very light dust coat followed by one heavy coat but not to heavy as to cover the metal effect. The finish, if you get it right is that of anodized aluminum. My finish is more like a car "Candy Apple" which I'm more than happy with. The pic shows it flat but that's the pic. It is the same type of paint I used on my flat top, "Blue Metal" but red this time. I also have a purple I wish to try in the same style paint.

Hack saw out again. Trimming down the HDD caddy. It gets cut about 2mm higher than this point where my finger is pointing-
Image
Like this-
Image
Put it in a size it up. It should be a little lower than the 60mm fan-
Image
Gap between the fan and the caddy I don't like so-
Image
More hacksaw work and this goes here-
Image
Bit of glue and it looks factory-
Image
I hacksawed down the DVD caddy as well, same way and mounted a piece of the same angle I used for the soft top mod. Drilled HDD mount holes to bolt the HDD in and was actually surpised this 500GB HDD is actually thinker than the 1TB I used in the Blue Metal machine so I also needed to trim down the post legs about 3mm to fit under the top. To do a flat top or soft top, you should be able to get a ruler and sit it from one edge of the side to the other and all between should be lower or the roof will bow up-

Ok so seeing as though I have no answer for the large HDD issue at the moment, I've decided to just close the ICE machine up until I have an answer and I'll continue to find on a bench test machine rather than risking damage to this machine. Good news is I can now show the pics of ICE as a conventional slim and also ICE as a soft top slim. First, the replacement 160GB HDD in place-

Booted up-

Conventional slim top fitted-

And now with the soft top fitted-

Well, now you can see the same machine with the 2 different styles in a true head to head comparison. What are your thoughts. In the defense of this white soft top, I will say white is an arse of a color for this mod. It is very unforgiving in the way of covering gaps etc. I have another dark red soft top machine case and nothing shows. :D But that machine was purpose built to be a soft top only as well. When I sort out this HDD issue I'll finish that red machine called Plum Crazy off and post some pics of it but until them, this is ICE.

No feedback boys, Is this mod any good or what?. I need some honest feedback to see whether I have this right or whether more modding is required such as a flat face. ;) Pluses with the vinyl top is controllers and other things don't slide off and it is an easier mod to line things up than a conventional slim. Not having heat issues and running the lid with no RF shield doesn't seem to be a problem. Overall I'm quite happy with the machine. It's become my music / music videos machine and the white clock back-lite allows me to see the time from the other side of the room at night. Haven't tried the USB port yet but no reason why it shouldn't work. Still testing to work out why a bigger HDD won't run correctly with the NO DVD bios but I'm sure I'll get something working manipulating the yellow DVD plug.

I don't like the vinyl top. On the edges it shows the gaps to much with the rest of the xbox case.
And I am wondering if it is solid to put something on the top.

Everything else I like. Then again the only new thing on this box is the top. The other stuff is ordinary for you.

Fashion-wise it is wrong. Because the top is flat and the other parts got bends and curves.
Let's say it is not sexy! :D You must have a bottle of whiskey to love this box. :D

I like it! :D
but I think it would look even better in black or another dark colour. Also if you could somehow give the rest of the case that faux leather look. That's probably like asking for tartan paint

I think it looks fantastic Xman, I like how you kept the original HDD caddy in there, i bet that really directs air flow the way it should be and keeps that slimbox cool. I like the white soft top but i prefer the original white lid. The soft top looks at bit out of place since it's got a different texture that the smooth front panel but it's not that far off. I REALLY LIKE that silver "limited edition" jewel your rocking on that, in fact that's probably the best looking jewel i've ever seen. Where did you get it/how did you make it? To me that thing ties it together big time and it doesnt clash at all with the purple P/E light at all.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been a while since i went back and read this thread, i usually just like pretty pictures but i have a question. Will you be using the HDD caddy for a second hard drive
on a power switch or just leave it blank? I figured you might have clearance issues but you could always use a 2.5 Laptop IDE drive.

I always like to look at your Projects Xman. I am always amazed with the cool ways you use the scraps and left overs from cuts to work for your new Ideas in the Project. Please continue sharing your designs with us.

Nice Job :)

The edges are an arse and the gaps are those of a normal slim but like I said, white is an arse of a color for this mod, (you know how big your misses arse looks when it's in white) The top is 3 ply so it's not breaking plus it sits near on top of the HDD inside and the tray supports.

Definitely not the best colour to use and I like the idea of the face being in the vinyl. Problem I've been unable to solve is how to attach the vinyl to the lower edge of the face plate without blocking the front vent holes?. I figured the ports would be solved by metal rings inside the ports to hold the vinyl in place.

That's how I do all my slim trays. Been a while since I used the style like in the 1st couple of pics. It is all for max airflow and trying to keep everything looking factory and it isn't hard when you don't use a Dremell on the trays and revert to a hacksaw. It does a much smoother cut and with very accurate and straight cuts. The jewel is from a clear crystal. They all had the jewel out here on them. The purple LED is twin colour 3mm LEDs...red / blue...set to orange and you get purple with these LEDs. May I suggest you try RGB 5mm common cathode LEDs. You can get red / blue / purple and then all the colours with the green. All 3 LEDs gives near white. To fit the 5mm you need to take a bit of plastic out as you would know but these LEDs are truly amazing what colours you can get out of them. I've only had a "play" on the bench with one so far but there are good for something special. The HDD caddy is to thin to have a HDD on top of it as I cut it at the HDD screw holes. You'd get a 2.5 Laptop IDE drive on it though but my idea is just leave it blank although this is where I put the Thomson board when required. This machine may need one yet. Could be a future spot for a CF card adapter? ;) Found a 400Gb Seagate IDE. I want to see if the non DVD bios ignores that HDD combo and track down if it is a WD issue I was getting or whether there is actually a limit to the NON DVDrive bios being able to run correctly. I will say with the 160GB HDD in the machine, it isn't missing a beat.

If you use your "offcuts", it all matches in. I've still got a few ideas I want to try on other machines but I'm really wanting to start the farm machine as it has no boundarys. An unlimited size face plate so heaps of shit can go into it and I want the machine running on 12 volts. That is the machine I want to through a lot of ideas at.

Xman,... sounds good. Definently share that project. i Have had good results with my 12V car Xbox. I still think the ps adapter design I am using with the diodes should be change to the transistor switch design you put on the forum a while back.

Anyway... Keep us posted :D

Yes.. I need to give that design a try. I think the 3.3V regulator may work better. Thanks for re posting :)
