God damn it, does that mean I've just purchased a bit of a guzzler? I just bought a little run-around off a mate on Saturday and that's a 2003 Ford Focus Zetec 2.0, oh well I didn't pay too much for it so I guess what I've saved on purchase price will go towards fuel costs.

I have to sell my car.. it was only averaging 29MPG!
Many of my regular* train journeys are ~40p a mile (that's about EUR 0.3 / km for those of you who live in that United States of Europe, or USD 0.6 / mile for those who live in the United States of God Bless Us All), so don't think you're getting out of it that way.

* "Regular" meaning "frequent" (in England), not "normal" (like in that US).

just dont drive it like you stole it :-) it will save you on petrol.

the ztec motors are quite a good effecient motor if you keep the revs in check it may need the plugs leads and timing looked at?
if you are running in open loop control it might be your o2 sensor clogged up or reading high.

Makes me laugh when i here the poms talking about gas guzzlers, i know the us vehicles are shrinking and engines becoming more fuel efficient but here the average family car is still 3.6/4ltr capacity or 5.4/6ltr V8 .

All the big capacity cars will go eventually... Ferrari and other super car manufactures wont be making high capacity V12's any more due to legislation and emissions... plus you can get more power from turbo-chargers with way better economy

I did indeed own a 4ltr Falcon when I was in Oz.. still used to wind me up filling the thing up with fuel.. drove it the whole way round Oz and some, sealed roads and 4x4 tracks, dug it out of mosquito ridden river beds, and drove it through floods so deep the water came through the vents... great car! - most the aussies I knew ran rice motors, one had a Commodore but again moaned about it sucking juice and it spent most of its life in the garage...
