Firstly, APOLOGIES for being absent for the last 2 months

Has been a cascade of things going on, including a complete computer software rebuild.
It was a great virus .... lots of things started to go wrong but the final nail was the bios disabling of the DVD drive ... which i only found out after a fresh install attempt of winOS.
Lucky I had usb option ticked AND have a usb ext HDD

That aside I have built a NAS as I needed and am back on the xbox fixing task.

professor_jonny I would agree with yourself and nextelhalo that a replacement power supply/board is next.

I am currently living in Ireland and would very much welcome if any of you know off-the-cuff (i.e. absolutely no work by yourselves) of someone who ships overseas.

Thank you again to you all and I am fully committed to seeing this through, I may have given the "hit-and-run" impression, but that it not my intention at all.

Looking forward to your thoughts, as usual.

Regards
Marcus

Looking at the "parts" access ideas

After shipping etc, it may be best to just source an entire unit in the UK, I have a contact so I can ship within the UK and keep shipping prices down.

In your collective knowledge, is the crystal xbox a "same" model around the world, it is advertised as same release in Europe and Au

Since I am in Ireland a UK plug on the power cord is no worry as I currently have to use an adapter for the Au plug at the moment.

Ireland, UK and Au all have 230v & 50Hz so the unit should be no issue from a "supply/transformer/step-down" point of view.

Thanks again for reading

Tests so far.

I purchased a v1.6 working crystal xbox and so far have swopped/tested;

power cord
power board
re artic silvered the GPU
CPU is on very tight and I dont want to force the heat sink off

No success.

Thanks everyone for your time. I will have to let it sit and think about what to do next.

Hmm well I guess you can rule out the PSU then. Just for the hell of it you might try disconnecting the HDD power and IDE cable with your newish PSU in there and see if it stays on longer, sounds to me like you've covered most of the bases and did it well. PJ may be on to something with swolen caps, never know.

Thanks Nextelhalo.

The only "funny" thing was that the CPU heatsink, even engaged fully is quite easy to "wiggle".

Could I somehow try to sand the heatsink (the old ink print on paper idea) to get a tighter fit?

If all seems impossible, is removing the xecuter 3 and trying to solder it in the new box worth all the trouble in your opinion or just purchase a 2.6 unit with the solderless extra?

I was a bit bummed searching yesterday to find the 3's dont exist anymore.

I did not fully disable the HDD on the last try, so I will try that as below;

OLD BOX

with NEW PSU
OLD HDD - with power and IDE removed

Then I will give the capacitors a good look over to see if any "appear" damaged.

Those heatsinks on the CPU are like that, they will wiggle alittle bit which is fine. As long as it's seated well and firm you'll be fine. It's easy to remove the X3 and move it over however when you solder the pinheader to a 1.6 board you'll also need an LPC rebuild board or solder some wires from the LPC pins to spots on the board to activate it (MS disabled it due to modding). If you have ok solder skills you can do it just read up on it before you try. Replacing the capacitors might be easier but if all else fails just move the chip over. Those solderless adapters are cool but you have to make sure they're on there just right or the chip will not function.

Those X3's are like gold so keep yours for as long as you can, it's the Cadillac of mod-chips

By the way if you ever quit troubleshooting and move on to the new box with a 2.6, I'd suggest learning to solder, and perform the rebuild. As a motherboard gets warm the lpc holes tend to expand enough to lose connection with one or more pins on the solderless xapt3rs, causing a FRAG upon powering-on again, and the need to continually re-adjust the things. If you're unlucky the upper threaded half of a xapt3r's base screw will be one that was made too short to receive the nut, too. Those were my experiences, anyway.

Thanks Nextelhalo & foxinabox

I will be looking for "odd" capacitors on the weekend.
Good to know that the CPU is usually a bit "wiggly".

I will keep the X3 nice and close and thanks for the information regarding the "solderless is easy, but maybe you pay a price for the "easy""

Will post more after the weekend.
