I found the instructions for the Akira modchip on the net, and it includes the solder points :) If anybody wants them let me know :)

you have to flash it with the akira flash bios but to load this bios you need to use pheonix bios loader.
i have one of these chips also, they are a pain to update.
Just flashed the Akira modchip with X2 bios using Hexen disc :D

I've experienced the exact same symptoms you were having with my X3 machine, choppy graphics and no x3 config it was usually if the chip was not sitting straight on the pinheader or the D0 wire was loose, Your old mobo might still be fine it could be worth it to use as a softmodded machie, doesnt hurt to try :)
