emulator roms and snaps over network?
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I am starting to think the same thing. I have mine hooked up over a router, and I have been streaming movies from my PC this way for several years, so I know that it works. However, I wonder if the network settings I am using in PSCXBOX are the problem. I have searched online for anything about running PSCXBOX over the network, but have come up empty.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Madmab also mentioned this:
make sure that SMB part is all lowercase.. for example if he has..
smbshare=SMB://10.1.1.1/EmuXtras
change it to
smbshare=smb://10.1.1.1/EmuXtras
Personally I would recommend clearing smbshare. Setting the rom_dir to a drive that exists (like rom_dir=e:) and then seeing if he can manually browse his network. If he can then set the rom directory using that method.
However the above should do the trick.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
DUDE!!!! you totally ROCK!!! Who would have figured changing 3 little letters from uppercase to lowercase would do the trick. It works great now. I just finished setting up my PS2 to play games over the network, in that everything had to be uppercase in order to work. I just figured it was the same with the XBox. Thanks a million.

I think you mean PSOne games
Good to hear this is working though, I'll have to try and free up some time and have a go myself.

No, about 2 weeks ago I set up my PS2 to play PS2 games over the network as well. I would have liked to have the PS2 play the PSOne games, but apparently it does not work well over a network, so I went with the XBox, which lets me use more features like preview vids, etc.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Oh sorry a bit of confusion there, I thought you were talking about the xbox playing PS2 games

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
No problem. That would be really cool though. That would really turn the XBox into a Super Machine!!whufclee wrote:Oh sorry a bit of confusion there, I thought you were talking about the xbox playing PS2 games
Hey Bigby, now that I have the PSX games running off of the network, can you give me a clue how to get the snapshots to show up. I keep setting the network path to the screenshot directory, but nothing shows unless I put them onto the E: drive of the Xbox. Any clues to help me out?
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
my media directory is set to my smb directory where the snaps are. I also have the saved screenshot directory and movies/preview directory set to my smb directory where the snaps are. And the snaps are named the same as the roms, it is just that I don't have enough space on the XBox harddrive to put them all there.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
It could be that you have set your path to media\artwork\action ?
When it should be simply pointed to your media folder. I'm not sure how exactly you have it set up, so I am guessing here.
For Amiga, as an example I have...
Media Directory - SMB:\\AMIGA
In this case my screenshot folder being - AMIGA\Artwork\Action
But the path should only be set to AMIGA.
Just noticed that the default directories are using "SMB" in uppercase, as opposed to the smb share which is in lowercase.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
is there a specific format needed in terms of labeling these folders? Maybe a FAQ somewhere? You have yours in a folder called action, whereas mine is in a folder called snap. Does that matter?
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
To be honest, I don't know.
I have always used the xtras folder structure, which has all the Action, Titles, Box Front, Misc folders in the Artwork folder.
If you ask at emuxtras.net, then maybe madmab will answer.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Madmab pm'd me and here is what he said...
Madmab wrote:I don't think I disabled the screenshot directory from being viewed remotely. So the only thing I can think of is directory structure...
e:\screenshots\psx\
So if he has (for example)
smb:\\playstation\snap\gamename1
smb:\\playstation\snap\gamename2
smb:\\playstation\snap\gamename3
It needs to be
smb:\\playstation\snap\PSX\gamename1
smb:\\playstation\snap\PSX\gamename2
smb:\\playstation\snap\PSX\gamename3
Then he would point the "screenshots" directory to "smb:\\playstation\snap". The PSX is added by the emulator. Why? Well because the old x-port emulator assumption was that screenshots for the systems were stored in a "screenshot\emulator" format and not "emulator\screenshot" layout.
As you know my newer "artwork" layout works better for the latter setup.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
sigh.... OK, let me see what I can do here. This is beginning to be somewhat frustrating, but I will keep at it till I succeed. (all my other emulator snaps/videos work just fine, but they are on the Xbox harddrive, and it has run out of room)
Thanks for the info!

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Hi all , first post here for me. I found this forum using a tapatalk app on my android.
I have just recently softmoded my Xbox with EvolutionX and started to load it up with various emulators. Using FlashFXP.
Since I am using the stock HD I found this thread very interesting.
I have pscxbox v21 on my box and an iso of Boshido Blade 1 & 2 , I tried burning a copy to a dvd with no success and was wondering if this would work instead. However that is besides the point, and I would love to have this type of setup for N64, PSX, Arcade, and Xbox games if possible.
So, what im wondering is what exactly I need.
I currently have a Windows XP machine connected to the same router my Xbox is on.

What is SMB? I looked it up and it stands for Server Message Block. Ive come to the impression that I need to set up a program called Somba, am I on the right track?Bigby wrote:I find it easier to edit the emulator's .ini file, which is in the "SAVES/PCSXBOX" folder on the E partition.
This is an example of my network settings:

GATEWAY_IP=10.1.1.1

smb_nameserver=LOFT-PC

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Well, I finally was able to get mine to work perfectly, but I hate to tell you that of the 4 emulators you listed, I believe only the PSX is capable of being played over a network. The Madmab emulators are set up to work over a network, so that includes about 20 different systems, but he does not have a version for N64 and MAME, and XBox games also have to be installed to the local hard drive in order to work(no idea why). If you download the PSX emulator, you need to go into network settings in the emulator and setup your computer's IP address and the folder where your roms and media are. If you read through this thread, you can also see that they need to be in the right directory structure to work correctly.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
The Emulators are different than Xbox games.
Emulators, Xbox games, XBMC4Xbox, EvoX and UnleashX... All those are "software" that the Xbox can run, but it only can run 1 at the time.
While you're playing an emulated game, the Xbox is running an emulator, the game (ROM) is not a "software" on is own.
So while you're running /designing your own software (Emulator in this case), you can add network support and whatnot..
But the way the Xbox was designed (and poorly documented), when a Xbox game is running you cannot have any control on that, so you cannot load stuff via network.
It's not possible for the Xbox to run is own games in an emulation layer. (not enough resources, duh!).
It might have been possible to "add network support" if enough RAM was not allocated. Major hacking (probably in BIOS) would have been required to execute the extra code.
Pretty much like its done on the PS2, but sadly it never happened. I think there is good chances that it was not possible at all. IMO at this point it will never happen.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
So I dont need to set up anything on my computers end or make any exceptions on my router?
Well I opened the .ini file for the playstation emulator and put this in
LOCAL_IP=192.168.1.3
SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY_IP=192.168.1.1
smbshare=smb://192.168.1.6/Playstation Games
I also set up the folder as a shared folder using the utility found by right clicking the file in Windows XP called sharing and security. Which didnt work, I changed the back slashes to forward slashes, not sure if that matters.
I dont know what to change about it. My computer has two hard drives so do I need to have the G:/ in there?
Ill try it a few other ways and see what happens.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
did you put in the name of your computer-how it is listed on your network?
here is the example that I used:
LOCAL_IP=10.1.1.2
SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY_IP=10.1.1.1
smbshare=smb://10.1.1.1/EmuXtras
