FTP problems some files transfer other dont

i bought an Xbox x3 and LCD with 750gb hdd installed. its currently running 3.2.1 r31678.

ive been copying loads of files over t o the Xbox and noticed a problem some files cope and some files dont.

so firstly i transferred my Xbox original games with no problem its when i came to music and tv shows i had the problem. Itt seems some files cpe and some simple dont either the whole album will copy some or none of it with no apparent reason (ie some files not copied are the same size and format such as mp3)

has anyone else had this problem? ive tried a number of different things inc older versions of the ftp program(filezilla) changing modes to and from active and binary transfer is enabled as well as only 1 transfer at a time.

also tried it during xbmc, evox avalaunch and the slayers disc all with same result.

below is the kind of thing im getting just a snip of what what happening in filezilla - copying bob marley cd to xbox hdd from computer about 2/3's copied with the last 1/3 failed. reason simply is could not start transfer again with no apparent reason. btw im using windows 7

If you look at the files transferred you will see the longer filenames are truncated by Xbox file system - press F5 in FileZilla after transfer to see it. From the perspective of the FileZilla it cannot find the file with the original name so it complains about it.

This one in particular:

damm i actually forgot all about that, for flip sake duhhhhh....lol

i noticed this error pops up alot - Could not write to transfer socket: ECONNRESET - Connection reset by peer. does this again relate to the file name size? renamed a band of brothers series which wouldnt upload and its copying away now. will report back again when i try other files such as pics and music cheers

btw - sorry for the mass of txt in my last post but i was in a rush. ill be sure to add the complete text to pastebin and just copy a link

I'd say not. "ECONNRESET - Connection reset by peer" usually means that the either the server endpoint has disconnected, or the network on your side dropped.

If you're using wireless, it's possible that it's flaking, for various reasons - dropping connection on your side (client) or the server, crowded wi-fi channel etc. See if this helps: http://dandar3.blogspot.ie/2013/02/how- ... again.html

Nah not using wireless but i noticed that this doesnt show on my other pc so its all down to th crappy windows 7 im using. anyways even on my win 7 machine its copying the stuff i want no problem, was all down to name size.

However i was wondering if there any option in filezilla or another ftp client that would just cut the name to size itself? the reason i ask is that most of the video files are fine name and episode and season and there you go. but for the music i listen to dance which usually are remixes with long names but i don't want to loose all the names on the actual pc.

is there any way of copying these files as is? the state of trance 500 i have along is 5gb with about 50 sets and 20 songs or so per set. you see what i mean?

you can't get round the filename limitations. If you want to keep the long filenames, you can keep them on the PC and access them from the XBOX via samba/ftp/http.

I don't see how copying to the xbox will affect your filenames on the PC if you are keeping them there too anyway?

I don't think there's any client to know about the FATX limitations, you could I guess report the problem to FileZilla project so they know the long filenames will get truncated, to avoid that error where it says it could not find the file after upload. That way it won't lookup the file with the original long name, but with the shortened one.

But as Buzz and the link I gave you says, that's a limitation in the file system on Xbox, will just truncate the filenames, there's no way around it - that is for files stored on the Xbox internal hard-drive, which uses FATX file system (with its limitations).

There are a few workarounds I guess:
* copy files to Xbox but keep originals in some other place (PC, external drive, NAS), so you still have a copy with the long names for later use;
* have them shortened on Xbox, but use library view for full song / album names.
* add sources on XBMC4Xbox to point to external shares: PC, NAS servers etc. where you store them with long / original names.

ok guys thanks for the info. yea im keeping some of the music still on the computer but i wanted alot of it on the xbox.

as for the file-names im not bothered about the filenames cut to size its just a shame i cant just copy over the songs and let it automatically cut the name to the max character length.

I did think about renaming the files before copying over to the Xbox but with around 40 odd albums some sets and alot in the full days state of trance 500 and 600 folders id be there forever lol . ive only just got my head around having to rename alot of my tv shows before they can be copied to the xbox

not so straight forward a i thought it was gona be at this rate i might just have all the stuff copied over before the end of next month lol

ive renamed alot of files and got about 150gb of stuff on my xbox hdd but ive still got alot to go. does any1 know of an ftp program which supports fatx? if not is there even

while coping stuff over to the xbox i went into the cd on the xbox hdd and i saw a few of the songs had the filename cut (fatx limitation) yet i hadent renamed them and on checking the names were the full names on the xbox. really dont know how this was possible.

anyways if there isnt an ftp program does anyone know of a file renaming program that can mass cut the song names?

Don't use FileZilla, it has given me so many issues in the past, it's not worth the hastle.

It used to work perfectly years ago, but then arsed something up along the line.

For the purposes of fairness, Filezilla is my tool of choice - works very reliably for me. I mainly use it from Linux machines, but not exclusively.
I you really must use Windows, FlashFXP works well, but then so does Filezilla for me.

iam usinf flashxp now transferd 80 games at once all perfect no fail if i use filezilla most of them failes some files etc makes no sense
i use ehternet connection cat6a optic fiber no wifi

I'm sorry Filezilla doesn't work for you, but it's not likely to be a problem with Filezilla itself since it works fine for me.
Since you have a working solution using FlashFXP, that's fine, but if you want to make a useful contribution to the thread, you could spend time working out why Filezilla doesn't work for you and post your findings...

i found the problem i ftp all games 80 games would not ftp wierd symbols does this mean xbox file limit 4000+ ?
so how do i ftp games i have like 250 xbox games i want to ftp do i make a file games 1 games 2 and ftp the games would that work ?

i transferred all my xbox games to the hdd via filezilla with no problems. Had a quick look and although there's not alot i still have around 25 in my folder with no problems
