Re: New to xbox modding
there is the hot swap method which is probally the cheapest it involves powering the xbox hdd via your pc.
basically you power on the pc and holding it in bios or something then boot up the xbox until the hdd is unlocked then pull the ide cable and pop it in your pc while it is still powered from your pc from there you can boot xbox hdm to copy on the soft mod as the drive will be in an unlocked state to be able to access it.
but the easyest method is proballty a game save exploit.
basically it is a hacked game save that can be used to boot an installer dvd or other softwarwe to install the soft mod.
in this method you require a specific game and a memory cart and a method of getting the stuff onto the memory card ie hacked up usb cable .
from time to time i have seen kits for sale to do this.

Re: New to xbox modding
You cant boot from a non retail dvd and you cant run a non microft signed app with out the console exploited in some way.
yes you could use hexen or auto installer delux to install the softmod once you have exploited the console to run the disk
basically it will still require an exploit to install the softmod from the disk.
there are a few games that can be explioted mechassault, 007 and splintercell are the ones i know.
would you happen to have any of them ?

Re: New to xbox modding
yes and no as you can use a usb thumb drive if you hack it a bit to fit in the console/controller memory slot. but a standard xbox memort cart will do the job also.
the standard memory cart is just a usb tumb drive with a different connector on it.

Re: New to xbox modding
Not all versions of Mechassault work for softmodding. Read this post for details.
Yes, you will need a memory card and a method to get the gamesave onto the memory card. The easiest way is to use an existing modded Xbox, but I'll dig out a post with more details when I get 5 minutes.
Alternatively, as professor_jonny says, you can use a normal USB stick with an Xbox USB adapter. However, not all usb sticks work with the Xbox - it has to be smaller than 4GB, and have no special features (like extra partitions), and even then not all of them work. IME smaller and older ones are more likely to work.
