Help upgrading xbox hdd with chimp

Post by generaljewel »

i brought a compatible seagate 160gb hdd. I am trying to use chimp2618 to upgrade the hdd. My xbox is softmodded with the unleashx dash just recently. I put the chimp files currently via ftp. I open my xbox case up hook my new hdd by using a molex spiltter powering both old and new hdd. on the dash i take the ribbon cable from the dvd and put it inside the new hdd. I launch chimp where it says linux on the dash through my unleash x application menu. and when i am brought to the chimp menu i only see the options advanced and ethernet! i cant see the fatx menu to do the process...can someone tell me why this is happening?

it turns out my compatible hdd which i got from the xbox compatibility chart is not compatible afterall!! the ones posted on the chart was a seagate 160gb model with a older firmware in it while my one has a newer firmware. At the locking process it gives me all these errors such as no ata security features present or is this drive frozen? doesnt lock whatever i do. Guess got to try another cheap hdd...

Have you thought about doing a TSOP mod? That would let you run an unlocked HDD.

do you know what xbox version you have as some are unable to be modded this way?
and do you have a soldering iron/ able to solder as you need to bridge the tsop write enable points on the motherboard and are very tiny a plumbers soldering iron will not be suitable.

thanks for reply. do you know how to find out what xbox version i have? all i know is i have the lastest dash and softmodded with unleashx dash lol. that sounds complicated...dont think i would able to do any soldering!!

so i cant do the traditional xboxhdm process as i dont have a old computer with the right connections. Chimp i tried already two hdds both say no ata security device spec or somthing and always the i/o buffer error on device errors when starting chimp when cloning all the time. No idea if am doing somthing wrong. All i do is power on xbox with power splitter both hdd connected then do the hotswap take the ribbon out of dvd drive and into new hdd. Start chimp then scan IDE devices both hdd come up. Then i got to clone device byte by byte. After that lock process.

I heard of another way error 5 hotswapping or somthing beginining to think is it really worth all my time and money just to play some bunch of old xbox games...

If you have anything earlier than v1.6 you can make the TSOP mod (appropriate soldering skills notwithstanding). In my view this mod is the best mod one can ever make.

I think it tells you in unleashx's options menu somewhere. Probably under hardware or something like that.
