PLEASE HELP ...

Post by dogboy »

Hey hey =)
ok brand new member, so hoping im doing this in the right spot.....
been running my xbox as the hub of my entertainment for near on 10 years, streaming from my puter or just playing files on the harddrive using xbmc as my dash.... it has finally happened, the hard drive desperately needs a defrag, i have had recently, folders and files re appearing on my f drive that i deleted 6 months ago, and more common is .avi files fusing (for want of a better word) together with files i jad already delet.... e.g. new episode of elementary comes out, ftp it over to my video folder on f drive from my pc, and hakf way thru the episode it starts playing the 2nd half of the episode from last week, that file having already been deleted.... nothing ike this occurs if i transfer n watch from my e drive, but have always left e drive free of clutter so apps can run freely.....
AAAAAnyways, without removing or swapping said internal harddrive, is there any way to remotely defrag that anyone knows,
Thanks heaps in advance

you could backup everything from the problem partition to a pc, reformat that partition and copy everything back.

Fragmentation should have nothing to do with your problem - fragmentation is mostly a performance problem, you seem to have a file system corruption problem.

From what I understand, files appearing / dissapearing happens when you formatted the partition with the incorrect cluster size.

I would just like to add, this sounds like it could be an issue with cluster size.
How big is the HDD?

Edit: DanDar3 beat me to it.

its only like 100Gb, I never bothered upgrading when i finally left the iceage and bought a pc a few years after, wen i got sick of using unleashX and an xbox controller to mess with my xbmc scripts n stuff, ha ha.... there's like 60Gb of tunes, n 10Gb of games, the rest i always left for movies n stuff when went round a mates place n ransacked his p..... It has always run so smoothly n never had a hassle, then last 3 months, eeew

oops didnt see dandars, comment, will checkout that post, Ta

ok, checked that out, but I cant help thinking if it was cluster size issues, these troubles woulda happened before now, i just figured years n years of transferring files over and deleting them via ftp would have fragmented the drive???

Do what Buzz said and back up what you need and start over again. Knowing these machines you'll probably get another good 10 years out of it. :)
