[RPi] SqueezePlug

Post by xbs »

I finally decided what to do with my spare Raspberry Pi :D

I recently found out that the SqueezePlug distro (Raspbian) turns the RPi into a media server!

SqueezePlug is a platform for different Media-Servers like Logitech Media Server (f.k.a. Slimserver, SqueezeBox Server), MiniDLNA, MPD, Mediatomb, Twonky and Forked DAAPD.

It's also a platform for different Media-clients or players like SqueezeSlave, SqueezePlay (experimental), Shairport and Omxplayer.

Instalation and configuration was fairly easy, fast and fully automated.

After everything was installed (LMS (Logitech Media Server) and SqueezeSlave (player for LMS)), configured (SMB Share, Network, etc) and music scanned into the library I could finally enjoy all my Music Collection, WebRadio Stations and Podcasts in my living room!

My Squeezebox is wirelessly connected (Leguang LG-N18 150Mbps IEEE802.11 b/g/n USB 2.0 Wi-Fi Wireless Network Adapter) and controled by android or web browser.

If you guys wanna try it, here's some links to get you started...

Looks very interesting, I may have to look into something like that myself. Today I finally installed the openelec build (the latest dev version) - all I can say is WOW! So quick and snappy and everything I've thrown at it so far is working great, well almost everything as I'm still waiting on my MPEG-2 and VC-1 codec licenses to come through. It really is comparable to XBMC Frodo on my HTPC, so impressed I think I may buy another few units :D

worth mentioning you can use an O2 Joggler as a squeezebox client (amongst other things), which is another project site hosted on this server.

I almost bought one of those jogglers when they were on offer at the BTShop last year, might be a project for the new year there. Next time I catch you on teamspeak I'll interigate you more on the subject :)

They are pretty cool (sorry for thread hijack). I run JoliOS and xbmc on mine http://joggler.exotica.org.uk/jolios/ (has some screenshots)

Looks good mate, I might well be looking into getting one of those in the new year. I'm just being lazy now as I don't really have the time to do a search but what version of xbmc do you have running on it? Is it a special build for the joggler or a standard linux one? Is playback from the local network ok via wi-fi? If so this could be ideal for me as I quite often have a nice relaxing bath and take my tablet with me so I can watch a TV show at the same time... however it's only a matter of time before I drop it in the bath so a more permanent fixture would be good!

+1 for jogglers. We have one in the kitchen with modified stock firmware, its used as an internet radio since reception in there is almost non existent. I used to have squeezeplug running on a dockstar feeding the joggler via logitech media server, but now that runs on the server.

You'd need an extension lead or illegal plugs in your bathroom ;)

A 5v outlet'd be safe enough in the bath - although the wall might be a better place for it. :P

Well funny story I do actually have illegal sockets in my bathroom (although they are as far from the bath and sink as possible). I have to have a radio in the bathroom so thought I'd fit a socket and I found a live cable under the floorboards so just done a spur off that. I went away for the weekend and the missus phoned me up saying the house is haunted and the radio keeps turning itself on. Well when I checked to see if the cable was live it actually was, however what I didn't realise was it happened to be the thermostat wire for the heating so every time the heating went off the radio went off too and bam as soon as it came back so did the radio, my bad

in the rest home down the road the apprencice wired the whole of all the gp power points in the rooms on the hot water ripple control relay after installing a generator socket and it took them 3 months to figure it out and everyone was loosing there tv's during tea time and they just thaught it was the staff turning the power off to get them out of their rooms.
