how/where to unzip in xbmc 3.2 ??

Post by creon78 »

there might be an obvious answer and its probably staring me in the face, but where in xbmc do i unzip compressed files after transferring via ftp. or is it best to extract first and then ftp?
i know on the eden version on the pcx there is an option to extract files but im lost on the xbox.
any help appreciated, thanks.

Unzip it on your P.C. using Winzip or Winrar and FTP the unzipped folder across to your Xbox. Is that what you were after?.

yeah couldnt find anyway of opening the zipfile up on xbox but that was the advice given on his thread ( if i understood!!)

Unzip on your PC, use FileZilla to tranfert ..
Set FileZilla to BINARY mode, and limit to 1 max simultaneous transfers (In FileZilla: edit> Settings> Transfers | File Types)
To boot this build from the one you have (ie: not running this one at boot) ..
You can upload it anywhere and run it from the file manager. (File manager, like on the screenshot: System > File manager.)
I strongly recommend you to place it in E:\Apps.

To run your new build at boot, thats a totally different thing... and you need to be a bit more careful ^^
If you are on a softmod and want to change the default boot path, you need to use a shortcut, with a modchip its different.
1st make sure you can recover.. If you are on a softmod, make sure you have a backup of your EEPROM, if you have a modchip and a working DVD drive, go to the next step ^^.
  1. Find where your current build is booting from.. might be E:\Apps\XBMC, might be E:\Dash\XBMC.. It can be in a few different places.. Yours to find it :)
(to see if you find it... check at the xbmc.log and xbmc.old.log and check if there is change after booting 1-2 time and browsing the machine a few seconds)
  2. Upload the new build to E:\Apps\XBMC1 (For the rest i will use E:\Apps\XBMC as an example of the default boot path)
  3. For the next step.. You Need to use any dash that is not the one that boot by default. Any dash can do...
ex: Have a XBMCXbox build into to E:\Apps\XBMC66 (can be named anything) and boot it from the File manager. (Otherwise some files wouldn't get writeable)
  4. From FileZilla, while your xbox is running that "XBMC66" build:
Rename the curent default from XBMC to XBMC2, and your new build from XBMC1 to XBMC.
  5. Reboot and enjoy.
Your currents settings are stored into \UserData .. You can try copying your old one in the new build before to swap the default build...
But make sure everything is fine before to switch the default build... and Dont do this if your running an old build.

For future updates here another alternative: http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/viewt ... p?f=7&t=88

XBMC4Xbox support .zip and .rar.. But you endup using the Xbox 733 MHz CPU and just a few MB's of RAM to extract the file.
The transfer is faster, but the extraction is longer.

Is there any particular reason you recommend setting to only 1 simultaneous file transfer? When transferring lots of small files such as XBMC I always use the maximum 10 connections and also set UnleashX to accept 10 simultaneous connections. This dramatically speeds things up and means it only takes about a minute to ftp Jans build over to the xbox. Maybe you mentioned using just one connection for error checking? Using just one connection at a time should rule out any problems with corruption I suppose.

Well i know that mate, but lets not mix the cards... :? I dont want to have to give a link to unleashX or Avalaunch.... thats why...
And if someting is not correct... it will not tranfert the file.... just another trouble....
Thats an update /new build procedure... Not a "how to transfers stuff quick".
You should FileZilla to NINE simultaneous transfers BTW if you want to do this... The FTP client is using a connetions to show the files.. (9+1)
