Desperate.. Need Help Soft Modding

Hey everybody,

I'm new to this site, so please forgive me if anything I say is foolish. I've been searching for a step-by-step tutorial on how to mod the XBox, and just when I feel like I'm about to have some success, I crash and burn. I apologize in advance if anything I post on here is incorrect. I've been working on this for the past 5 hours and I'm pretty frustrated. This is the tutorial I've been using. Anyway, here's what I'm working with..

I have the save files on a memory card for the XBox. I've gone ahead and used the Splinter Cell exploit and installed Linux on the console. After that, I backed up the MSDash and the other files to assure I could get them back when I inevitably screw this up. I've gone ahead and completed the single layer install and everything seemed to be heading in the right direction.

Meanwhile, I've downloaded Filezilla and XBMC4XBOX 3.2 Stable to my PC, now I'm just waiting to use them.

The tutorial says that I need to transfer the XBMC4XBOX file to the Apps folder in my E drive, but when I expand the drive in Filezilla, Apps is nowhere to be found. Aaaaand this is where I'm stumped.

Once again, I really do apologize if this has been posted a million times, which I'd imagine it has been. If anybody is able to shed some light on my problems, hopefully without telling me I need to go a different route, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you very much for your time.

You didn't post a link to the tutorial you're following.

If you don't have an E:/apps folder then create it.

Thats a mad old tut, we did SID2.0 years ago. I hope thats not what you used for the softmod, if it is either grab SID5.12, XBMC Installer or AutoBuilder and upgrade that sucker to an NKPatcher based mod. All of em can also install XBMC3.2 as well for you

Thank you very much to both of you for your help. As for the SID file, how would I send that to the Xbox? Would I use FileZilla or burn to a DVD?

As for the video, I'll give it a watch tonight. Where can I get a copy of this Hexen disc I keep hearing about?

Are you happy with running XBMC4Xbox as an app (launching XBMC manually from the Applications menu)? If so, you can finish off that other tutorial you were following by creating the needed E/Apps folder and complete the file transfer. Otherwise, you still need to make XBMC4Xbox the default dashboard by using one of the suggested methods and their related tools. HeXEn disc usage is covered in this "Softmod Part 2" by whufclee

Once you've created the apps folder in E you can access it via FTP or the filemanager in XBMC.

EDIT:
You would go to Applications at the home screen of your current dashboard (likely Evolution X or UnleashX) to launch any installed application. You would need to "add source" for Programs>Apps/Emulators/Games etc under XBMC4Xbox

You will need to create Apps source in the programs menu in XBMC too.

You guys were absolutely right. I went ahead and created the E:/Apps and got the XBMC up and running from there. I'm only going to run it as an app for the time being, but I might attempt to make it the default dashboard at a later point.

With all of that being said, can somebody please walk me through installing emulators and roms?

You would need an E:\Emulators folder similar to the previous E:\Apps folder for your future emu/rom collection. Follow this on-going discussion regarding the pros/cons of existing emu's

Grab Emu Installer, it will install all the major emulators with ROMs. For upgradeing SID the easiest way is to use XBMC Installer and hit RE-DO Softmod or ShadowC UnleashX, it will format the C partition and install SID5.12.

Roms come in a variety of format including zip, bin, iso, etc depending on the arcade/console system. Search for the names mentioned in the linked thread above.

Hopefully this is the final situation..

I'm running XBMC4XBOX right now, everything seems to be as it should. However, I'm not sure how to get the emulators and roms over to XBMC so that I can actually play the games. I'm sure it's something silly, but I'm unable to figure it out at the moment.

Just grab Emu Installer, no matter the mod it will set things up proper for you and has a whack load of games so you hit the ground running.

You honestly sound like you need the easy route for things so I would seriously look into Team-Hq apps, we make evrything so easy a brain-dead monkey can use them and 99.9% screw-up proof

I'm guessing but are you having trouble getting the files on the xbox or not know how to make xbmc see them once they are on there?

If you dont have them currently on the xbox you can copy them via an ftp program such as filezilla to copy file across the network, use the ip adress and "xbox" and "xbox" as the password and user name for login details in the program on your pc.
once you connect then you shuld see the directorys of the xbox where you can copy the goodies.

I'm guessing you have ftp working as you have xbmc on there so:

if you have the files on your xbox then you just need to point to them in the programs section of xbmc4xbox.
if you press the white button then add source when in the program view and pick the directory where the emulators have been copied to then give it a name then save and they will then show up in the new group you created.
