Android XBMC Box

Post by whufclee »

Whilst looking on the support forums for my android tablet I came across this new android box. I'm very tempted... Do I need one? Well the answer is clearly no but I really want one just for the fun factor! I can vouch for the company, I broke my tablet I got off them and they replaced it with no problems - my tablet build and specs is amazing considering the price too (Eken A90). Yes this is twice as much as the Raspberry pi BUT it can do a shit load more and it also comes with a remote and built-in wifi. Oh I'm sooooo tempted, anyone got one of these yet? I'm guessing XBMC is still going to be a bit buggy but I bet it won't take the team long to iron out the problems.

I STILL (!) have not received my Rasp Pi from RS. 7 months since I pre-registered, 9 weeks since they accepted my order (and took my cash!). Grrrrrr.

I bought this the other day. It'll probably be 2013 before it arrives but it should be fun! :)

Mate that also looks like a very good find you've got there, seems like a right bargain. It appears to have very good specs - also looks like it uses the same GPU that they've been testing XBMC Android on, however don't take my word for that it might well be completely different! I really like the look of that remote they recommend, I actually need one for my HTPC so that could well be the ideal solution.

@spice: I'm sure you'll get it soon mate, think my second one (first was from Farnell) is due any time - after it was delayed for a further 4 weeks by RS. Still not sure what I'm going to use the second one for... I initially had a few projects in my head for the r-pi but now I've forgotten what I was going to do :?

Thanks whuf I'm looking forward to it even more now. The only reservation I have is that I read network playback of 1080p was poor on the previous model and may still be a problem. But it plays 720p fine so I can live with that.

Also, if it lives up to the specs advertised I'd imagine it would also make a nifty little games emulator. I'm sure you've already installed them on your Xperia Play but these are what I have installed on my android devices and work really well: GBA Player Lite (GBA), MAME4Droid (MAME), MD.emu (Megadrive), N64oid (N64) and SuperGNES Lite (SNES). If you have PS3 or Xbox360 controllers they are compatible with Android too. I ordered one of those remotes (but got it from ebay as I thought the shipping might be slightly quicker) so I'll let you know whether or not it's any good.

Speaking of the Xperia Play I bought this last week and it's great. I was thinking of upgrading to a Galaxy Nexus but it doesn't seem to have a similar accessory. I have it connected up to my Roberts Stream 83i and using Tinyshark I can play any track I can think of. No downloading or messing about with mp3s. Did you see they cancelled ICS for the Play whuf? Bastards!

I also bought one of those accessories last year when they were on offer (similar price to what you've got there I think), very handy for next to the bed. I really should hook mine up to speakers so I can listen to last.fm rather than just using it as an alarm clock. However saying that I only use the bedroom for sleeping and special time with the wife (or if she's not about then special time with Navi-X ;)) so it would probably just be another gadget that doesn't get used for me.

I didn't notice they had cancelled ICS for Xperia Play, just had a little search and there are other ways to get it on there. I'm still happy with mine, does everything I need it to and don't ever have any lag with the games - could just do with a better keyboard, tried a couple from the market but still not impressed. By the way, I flashed a JellyBean rom to my tablet last week and there's no flash support for any android system newer than ICS - adobe have cancelled it for some reason. Needless to say I'll be going back to the ICS rom so I can watch FlashSportStreams! I did find a way of installing Flash Player but it was glitchy :-(

Ok I've gone for it, after doing some research I thought I'd take a gamble on this one as it's only £32.98 delivered and the mk2 version has got some good reviews. Granted I will still need a remote for it but I've got one of those flymouse things on order so if that works well on my htpc I'll order another of those. It's coming from China and everything I've ordered from China lately is taking forever to arrive so I'm expecting it in about a month (although they claim 11-23 working days). There has been discussion on using this with xbmc on xbmchub.com so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, if it doesn't work then I'm sure I can flog it to someone else ;)
