Hi,
Ive picked up a second hand crystal xbox, when it starts to boot I get the service screen and error 05. I understand this is to do with hdd lock. I've opened it up (seals already broke) and it looks a seagate oem drive, which I presume is the original. All wires plugged on correctly. No signs of hard mod.
I've tried booting it with the evox boot disc and it still goes to the service error 05 screen.
Is there anything I can do or is it a lost cause?

if the hdd is locked and it does not match there is not much you can do but mod it and install a new hdd.
yes you can unlock the old hard disk using tools but it then wont work in this retail console unless you lock it with the same key on the eeprom of the xbox.
go buy a mod chip and a new hdd

Or you could buy an eeprom reader and build a new hard disc using XBOXHDM if you don't want to use a modchip.
