Where to start?

Post by SnoopFrogg »

Right now in 2016 is original xbox modding community still alive? If so, I just got a new XB for $4... Completely took apart. What are some cheap easy mods?

Hardware mods or software mods?

Hardware there are loads of things you can do, from the extremely easy. Example, changing the IDE cable to the damn hard, soldering new memory chips.

Software you have the softmod, then after that you have dashboards or homebrew. (Emulators and such)

So it all depends on what you want to do.

The modding community isn't seeing any big changes anymore but there's still a several folks tinkering and releasing software for it so it's alive still. You'll probably see most development happening within XBMC. Plugins and skins pop up every once in a while and XBMC itself had a release last February. To name a few recent XBMC related things going on: Origins (skin), Estuary (skin port - early stages), YouTube, and there's a few more concepts floating around. There's also been a few improvements to old techniques. Rocky5 released a softmod tool disc and ldotsfan did updates to some hard drive building tools.

anyways so if you're just starting out, softmodding is a good first step. Cheap and easy ways to softmod a console are gamesave expoits or hotwapping. I'd recommend the gamesave method. You just need one of the compatible Xbox games (splinter cell for example) and an xbox memory card with the files on it. There's free ways of softmodding but it's kind of a pain and I wouldn't recommend it for newcomers. I'd recommend getting your xbox softmodded using the gamesave method and then once it is modded, put Xbmc on it and start exploring what apps, emulators, etc are available.

If you want to do hardware or case mods, there's plenty of tutorials out there. It depends on what you consider "easy". Hard drive upgrades are a good trade of work/reward. Then there's light mods, paint, slim boxes...the world is your oyster.
