[Xbox 1.6] Problems installing XBMC

Post by KrisKenesei »

Hi there,

I'm trying to install XBMC as the default dash on a 1.6 Xbox using the shortcut method. I identified the current dash as some obscure version of EvolutionX, with boot executable xboxdash.xbe. I renamed the ShortcutXBE file to this, and created the cfg file with the XBMC destination path (XBMC 3.5.3). I even tested it by running the new xboxdash.xbe from within XBMC and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, this broke the softmod on the Xbox I think, and now I'm getting error code 13 constantly, I can't even boot into an FTP-enabled rescue DVD. I have a cloned HDD at the ready, so not all is lost, but I don't know where I messed it up. Any suggestions on what to do next time, not to brick it again?

Cheers.

Well for one you changed the wrong file, xboxdash.xbe is the official Xbox dashboard file used to load the softmod exploit.

What you want is E:\Dash\ or E:\Dashboard\

Or upgrade to a modern softmod, with ShadowC protection so you don't do this again.

Thank you for your reply, I indeed have swapped out the wrong file, although the guide (http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/wiki/Installing_XBMC) does mention a file in the root of C in the first step, so I don't exactly understand why mine is not there. It is in a folder named xodash.du and called xonlinedash.xbe. There is also an executable called update.xbe in this folder, do you know by any chance, if it is xonlinedash.xbe that I need to replace for certain? I tried running it and it booted the dash, so it is very likely that I've found the right file, I'm just trying to double check.

Cheers again... :)

EDIT: Also, I noticed that this Xbox is also only seeing 120Gb of the available 250, and it also cannot see my G drive (which should be there as I used Chimp when cloning). There is no way to flash this mobo, so what options do I have? Should I attempt to use Xbpartitioner with the stock BIOS?

Install my softmod & after its finished load NKPatcher Setting > Partition types > F & G partitions, now reboot.
(Use the Quick Upgrade version if you have access to the HDD & can boot xbes. If cannot you can use the extras disc, or use the save if you need to start fresh)

Now you can use the disc to install XBMC4Xbox 3.5.3 or manually install it to by playing the XBMC folder in C.

Dear Rocky5!

Your installer is probably the most precious few megabytes I have downloaded this week. It rebuilt the softmod, and extended the F partition to use the remaining HDD space. Also, it now boots directly to XBMC, which is fantastic. You've done a real good job with this installer, many thanks! Only thing that doesn't seem to work is updating via XBMC4Xbox installer - it cannot find the shortcut xml and neither can I, manually. How do I update XBMC running your softmod? Do I just swap out the whole E:/XBMC folder for the up-to-date version?

Cheers again, much appreciated.

If you're wanting to update manually you only need to replace a couple folders & the default.xbe.
I usually just overwrite all folders & files except the USERDATA folder.

But you're running the latest build, so it's kinda pointless just now.

I also have never used the XBMC4Xbox Installer, so I cannot say how to fix it or use it.
And I'm glad you got it all sorted, also thank you for the kind words.
