Afraid of messing this thing up.

Post by SlammedNiss »

I have a soft-modded Xbox I've had for years. I recently decided it would be a great idea to update some of the emulators and the dash. Got all my new emulators upgraded on E: and F: then decided to update to the newest version of XBMC. So, I deleted the existing XBMC folder on D: then proceeded to copy over the newer 3.53 XBMC folder in its place. Rebooted, and then I get the screen below.

Image

I tried FTP'ing into the Xbox at the listed IP and that's good to go and I can see all the files. I'm really afraid of screwing around too much as I don't want to mess up to where it won't even boot.

So, please tell me there's and easy fix.

since it is still booting I would suggest you pop in an auto installer disk such as slayers and ftp xbmc across.

you messed up because you tried to ftp xbmc on top of files that were in use.

how I update a running build is copy the new build onto the hdd in another place load it from the file manager then ftp files over the top of the original build that is not running.

OK. I had to think about it, but I'm pretty sure I understand.

1. Reinstall XBMC with something like Slayer's or AID.
2. Install XBMC 3.53 on, say F drive using FTP.
3. Start Xbox with existing XBMC, go to File Manager, and run XBMC 3.53 default.xbe.
4. While 3.53 is running, FTP 3.53 back to E: drive in place of the existing XBMC on E:

Now when I FTP 3.53 to E:, should I just overwrite what is there, or can I delete the existing XBMC folder and do a clean install of 3.53. Also, it's been a few years since I've messed with any of this. Any preference as to which auto-installer to use? Or do they all still pretty much do the same thing.

yip but as you will boot from the disk you can just copy files over top of original buggered build of xbmc.

OK, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here. I was able to get the Xbox started using AID (btw, PITA to find these days compared to years past). I ran XBMC from drive D:, FTP'd to the Xbox and deleted then reinstalled the XBMC folder to E:. When I restart the Xbox without AID in D: I get the same screen as I did before. Now here's the kicker. If I start with AID and navigate to E: in file manager, of course if I click on default.xbe in the root I get the error screen. But, if I click on default.xbe in the XBMC folder, XBMC loads just fine.

I can verify that the <Skin> folder is there, so that possibility can be eliminated. Where is this <keymap.xml> file supposed to be because I can't find it. The only thing I removed from the folder after I extracted it was the non-english language packs.

Any idea what it is I'm doing wrong?

Sounds like you have partially deleted your softmod maybe. Make sure you have only one XBMC folder in your booting location that is called XBMC. You can call any other folder something like XBMC2 and it won't be an issue but having two called XBMC in the booting location will cause a machine that won't boot.

Owww.......

Did you put XBMC in E/?. You could try putting XBMC in E/Apps, E, C, and C/Apps and F, F/apps and see if any of those work. If one does you can see on the log which one is actually working and delete the others. Also the default path is usually C/EvoXdash .xbe or E/Apps/EvoXdash .xbe. You could try putting EvoXdash in these locations and see if it will boot to EvoXDash. Once it is booting EvoXDash you can then put in a shortcut to get it to the XBMC location. This is quite normal practice.

What softmod are you using?

If loading the default.xbe in E give you the above error that means the default.xbe in the root of E is the XBMC xbe.
(Should be about 8mb in size)

& if so that's where your softmod is looking for its dashboard, you have three options.

1) stick all the content of th XBMC folder in the root of E.
(Messy looking)

2) create a shortcut & place it in E to point to E:\XBMC\default.xbe

3) look in my sig, download the quick upgrade zip & follow the instructions.
(Then all you would do is stick the content of the XBMC folder in C:\dashboard, can all be done on the Xbox)
Download Xbox Softmodding Tool & Extras Disc
XBMC4Kids Mod

Aren't all softmod files stored on C:/? The only thing I had done was delete the original XBMC folder in E:/ and FTP the new XBMC folder in it's place. I didn't delete anything else. Also, it was in the root of E:/ and not E:/Apps. The only thing that's in my E:/Apps folder is DVD2Xbox.

It was softmodded using AID several years ago. With all that said, I got tired of messing with it and installed XBMC to E:/ using AID and it's now working again. I also got it updated by copying 3.53 via FTP and just overwriting the existing folder instead of what I went thru before. I might go ahead and look into downloading that quick upgrade zip tool and move the dash to C:/dashboard, that way I can free up as much space on E:/ as possible as it's only an 80gb HDD. Plus, I don't like clutter and having the dash on C:/ makes more sense than the alternative.

Thanks for the help guys, I do appreciate it.
