XBMC Issues, a reformat has occurred

Post by Poimandres »

Hello guys,

Sorry I'm starting out with a new user with such a complicated topic. My friend bought a modded Xbox with UnleashX. It once had emulators and XBMC on it. Then he decided that a format was a good idea (While he was exploring the many options), but when it was over, he realized that XBMC had been removed, as well as all his emulators, and that a format of the hard drive was, in fact, a bad idea.

UnleashX still runs fine, and can still play copied games, but I would like to help him and put everything back the way it was. I think I got the jist of copying files to the Xbox, but I'm having an issue finding information about how to create a dashboard shortcut. For example, if I want to play Marvel VS Capcom 2 (A copied Original Xbox game on his hard drive), all I have to do is select "Games" and then "Marvel VS Capcom 2". Before his reformatting experience, I was able to select XBMC in the same fashion in a different menu (I believe it was in "Media"). So, I need to know two things:

1) How to properly copy and/or install XBMC to the hard drive via a DVD (Not critical but useful info)
2) How to properly create a shortcut from the dashboard to XBMC

Also, if the process differs for emulators, please advise on this. Thanks alot!

Need a few details.

How is the system modded?

1) Softmod
2) Chip
3) TSOP Flash

Without the above info, we could spend hours telling you something that doesn't work for your/his setup.

If he's softmodded, then it's as simple as downloading the disc from my sig, upgrading his softmod & installing XBMC as the dashboard.

Softmod:
There are a few ways, easiest is booting the Xbox & checking the C partition & listing the folders/files there.

Second way is to, use a disc that disables the ShadowC protection of a softmod, (if the C partition is empty & hexen, my disc eg. can disable the shadowc) & check the C partition again for folders/files.

TSOP:
Checking the C partition for folders/files, more specifically if evoxdash.xbe exists.

Chip:
Opening the console & looking for a chip, or looking through the left side grate & see if you can see a led or a chip.
(Also if he/you have a board protruding from you Xbox that's a good giveaway it's chipped.

So I started with the Softmod check. The Xbox has about 7 or 8 partitions, some of which just seem to take up space with no file structure (Odd to a guy like me, but whatever). Here is the contents of the C: drive:

C:/a/
C:/fonts/
C:/SID/
C:/Skins/
C:/config.xml
C:/evoxdash.xbe
C:/items.xml
C:/ob***
C:/xboxdash.xbe

*** = No file extension

From what I can gather based on what you wrote, it appears to be a TSOP flash. Hopefully the file structure is not damaged beyond repair...Also, there is no LED or chip protruding from the left vent port of the Xbox. If it makes any difference, it's a translucent green Halo: Combat Evolved edition Xbox.

It looks like your softmodded with the NDURE 4920 dash exploit.
(What I use in my softmod)

So you should be good to just upgrade using my disc or Hexen.

If you use my disc, you can install XBMC 3.5 after the upgrade is complete.

The latter forget. You have a reminisce of a softmod on there, as there is no XODASH folder that would be required for the exploit to function.

Launch the xboxdash.xbe & tell me what happens, also what's in the a folder?

Quick way to see if it's TSOPED, is open it up & look & see if the TSOP write points are soldered, has it been opened before?

Thanks for the reply!

So launching xboxdash.xbe causes the screen to go black, and nothing else happens (At least for 2 straight minutes, I waited). I have to restart the machine at this point.

As a side note, my friend has come to the conclusion that he is unable to copy games not because of the lack of hard drive space, but because the reformat has damaged the system files, as it no doubt has in some way or the other. I didn't take the time to determine this, but as I said, we have all the original copies of the games already there except for a game called "Halo Maps v2", which we definitely do not want to lose. As I understand, I am able to FTP the files over to a PC using a program like FileZilla, but I do not know which files I will need to copy for this game. If I have to start over with a complete reformat and reinstall, then I shall do so only if I can copy these files successfully.

Thank you again for your reply.
