I just hooked up my backup xbox to test the latest nightlies, when I heard something horrible. The HDD makes a grinding noise when it's being accessed. I don't know when it started either because I haven't used it for a while.
So in the event of it dying how can I avoid a disaster? I was reading someone's post earlier saying that you might as well unlock it if it's hardmodded? (mine has an x3). Do I just need a copy of the EEPROM?

Re: Failing HDD?
if it is hard modded just unlock the hdd it will cause no issue apart from if you disable the chip it wont be able to boot retail.
you only really need the eprom key to lock the hdd if you want to use a softmod or boot retail.
more of the issue would be to back up the hdd before it fails totally.
the magenetic fludid could of leached out the spindle bearings or there may be some sort of head flying errors causing retrys and constant going back to park between reading blocks of the disk.
back it up with chimp or ftp the files to your pc or something.
then pop in a new hdd pop in a copy of slayers, hexen or aid into theh dvd drive and she will be running sweet in notime.

Re: Failing HDD?
Well I don't think I can even boot retail on it because if I turn it on with the power button I get an error telling me service is required; and it's been like that since I got it off the previous owner I think.
Am I right in thinking that if I unlock the HDD, Windows 7 will be able to recognize it?
Anyways cheers for the advice man.

Re: Failing HDD?
it might be unlocked or the system files on c might be messed up if says service required when you try to boot with the eject button into retail mode.
There are tools to be able to acess it from windows but they are slow and unreliable best bet would be to use ftp program from the console from an auto installer dvd to back up the files to your pc.
you can unlock the hdd from x3 config live there is even ftp from with in there but you have to use a program that forces binary transfers because of the bugs with the ftp with in the x3 bios.
