PAL vs NTSC

Post by hawsey »

Is the only difference between an ntsc and a PAL xbox the fact that they have been software set for that region ?
I know the power supplies are different but other than that are they the same ? I.e could you take a U.S motherboard and plonk it in a UK machine :-)
Thanks .

1. Yes, caveat emptor.
2. Electrically, yes.
3. Yes, caveat emptor.

Aside from the power supply difference, the rest of the electronics are identical.

The remaining differences are in the settings data in the EEPROM and the config on the hard disc drive.

One principal difference is that NTSC versus PAL settings force the video encoder chip to provide differing outputs.
One intentional (or otherwise) consequence of that is that PAL configured consoles can't/won't/don't support hi-def resolutions - in fact they'll only do 576i*.
That's why we in Great Britain, and indeed other PAL geographies, tend to use Enigmah to change our boxes to NTSC so that we can enable 720p (and 480p** and 1080i) support through a component lead.

* native PAL std-def resolution
** native NTSC std-def resolution

pal is technically a better video standard as in all areas as pal has a higher band width but a lower frame rate except in pal-60 format.
PAL usually has 576 visible lines compared with 480, ntsc is mainly adopted by northern america, japan Taiwan, the Philippines and South Korea, there are regons in south america also.

for example south korea is ntsc but is 240vac 60 hz
as far as i am aware all 50 hz power supply regons are pal and 60hz are ntsc except for japan where they have a mix of both 50 and 60hz mains supplys, they have frequency converters in parts to join grids together with ac to dc to ac conversion.

In short not all xboxes that are ntsc are 110v but a majority of them are.

microsoft decided that pal regons did not need hidef for what ever reason and that is why we all convert our xbox consoles to ntsc to get 720p and 1080i modes seems silly but thats what we have, i think at the time it was not so wide spread as it is now?
