I inherited my friend's old xbox that I modded for him years ago. It was rock solid for the longest time, but started acting up on him, so he let me have it after he upgraded to a new HTPC.
The problem is it won't power on with the power button. Sometimes, it will power-on after I plug it in to a power source. Sometimes I can boot to the chip bios by hitting the eject button, and then launch the actual dashboard. Also, the power button won't turn the system off. It doesn't respond at all.
So it sounds like a bad power button board, right? Well, I've swapped it out with two other known working boards with the same results. So it's gotta be the powersupply, right?
The power-button boards aren't version specific, are they? The box that won't power on is a V1.4/1.5, and all the other button boards I've tried were from v1.0/v1.1 systems. Since all my spare/junk boxes are older, I can't swap out the powersupplies to try. Also, where the hell can I get a replacement powersupply?! It seems like just months ago you could still find all sorts of parts and even chips for the original beast, but now it seems she's all but forgotten about.
Anyway, any help/advice/comments/anecdotes would be sweet.
Does this sound like a shot powersupply?

Crap, that's exactly what it sounds like. Ugh, guess I need to go brush up on my soldering skills. Thanks!

I've done this repair before and it's not bad. Just make sure that you use 30 awg or thinner wire, and if you can't get the wires to stick to the pads, then use flux.

This is a very good repair tutorial. I used this once already to repair my XBOX and it now works fine

Are there any pictures out there of the traces on a 1.4 or 1.5 board,? I'm fairly certain I'm electronically competent to figure it out, but you never know...

There's a separate tutorial for 1.2/1.3 motherboards here: http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php? ... ee86c6c55f
I'm not sure if 1.4/1.5 boards are different, but even if they are, I seem to remember that it's not hard to simply follow the traces to their respective solder pads on either end.
