Received a softmodded Xbox and want to upgrade & clone HDD

Post by JJBB61 »

I realize there are hundreds, if not thousands, of threads and topics around the web talking about this very thing, however circumstances will almost always vary. What I'm looking for is a simple step-by-step guide to upgrading and cloning the original Seagate ST310014ACE (IDE) to a 2TB Western Digital WD20EZRX (SATA). I've looked into the supported HDD list and it's there. I'm pretty sure I'll also need a SATA-to-IDE bridge (of which a few seem to work for some, but not for others.)

What I don't really understand is that some guides go into details such as:
  • Replacing the stock 40-pin IDE cable with an 80-pin UDMA/133 cable
  • Using a 4-pin Molex Y splitter cable
  • Setting jumpers on the drives
  • v1.6 (what?)
  • XboxHDM (huh?)
  • ...etc
And many guides don't even mention some of that stuff, yet people that comment on said threads seem to have no problems. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, I'm getting mixed information and have absolutely no clue what guide to follow. I don't want to lose what's on the current HDD, hence my coming here.

I'm hoping that one of you will have the correct steps for me to follow using the information I've given you.

hey, well I know a little bit I can go ahead and tell you that you need a converter for SATA's then you need atleast something to power up the hard drive like a PC or another xbox side by side, then you need to have CHIMPS installed on your xbox, if you have a 1.0-1.5 I think you need a certain kind of version of chimps, which is the original, if you have a 1.6 xbox then you need a version that supports your xbox of 1.6.

you need to set your jumpers to slave (new HD) you don't need to use XBOX HDM since CHIMP is much easier, better, faster, and safer.

you need to be able to open your xbox with a tork screws, or modify your screw driver but it can damage your screws.

Pointy pliers, the kind you see in movies. Image

a work place, to keep all your stuff in place, so you don't mess up your Xboxes, or burn em out by touching a electrical shock.

you can read here as well don't get to mixed up, if you need help ask :)

That guide appears to be for an IDE drive and I have a SATA drive.

Exact same process only you have a IDE2Sata converter between the HDD & IDE cable.

Use a 80wire IDE & make sure your adapter has jumpers, so you can set master or slave.

Hey, Rocky5. Thanks for that info. I just found out the Xbox is v1.6, should I still follow that guide even though the writer says it's for 1.0-1.5?

One more thing, why are people saying that I should be worried about data loss after a while?

EDIT: I got it to work. Xbox v1.6 needs Chimp 2.6.1.8. Everything went smoothly following the guide above. Thanks!
