Console died

Post by caseyatbt »

My console died. The breaker on the power supply keeps tripping. I believe the hard drive is still fine. If I purchase another XBOX, can I just move the drive over and have a fully functional XBMC, or will it still need soft modding?

My guess is that the new XBOX will have a different EEPROM than that which the hard drive is locked to.

Correct. If your current dead Xbox was softmodded, then the hard drive will be locked to your Xbox's EEPROM, and each Xbox has a unique EEPROM. If you have a backup of your EEPROM, then you can do one of two things.

1. Unlock the hard drive with the current EEPROM and then lock it with the new Xbox's EEPROM
2. Update the new Xbox's EEPROM with with old EEPROM

If you hardmod the new Xbox, then you can run the hard drive unlocked, but you'll still need to unlock it. If the problem is your power supply, then you might be able to just buy a new power supply.

Agreed with AZImmortal, check the PSU first, especially the bottom of the PSU. Look where the power plug goes into it and look on the bottom of the board at that point, those solder joints may have cracked. If so you can resolder them easily, or just buy another PSU but you have to make sure it's for that version XBOX.
