1.4 xbox led Ring flashes red only

Post by Oldxboxusa »

I have a 1.4 xbox with softmod here. The box doesn't starting. Only the led ring flashing red. I have disassembled them, the clock capacitor was broken. So I have remove it and clean the main board with isopropylalkohol. Red flashing! What can I do to rescue the xbox?

That sounds like a dead eeprom chip, or the chip is corrupt/empty.
Or it's just a generic hardware failure.

red and green? or blinking red on-off?

the chip will work with the EEPROM, yes. but really at this point in the process, a chip is the only way to get it working

can you boot a DVD?

That's a dead eeprom alright.

Easiest way to fix this is to use an eeprom reader & flash the backup onto the chip. (If the chip is not damaged/fried)

Can get them off Ebay for a few £ also you will need a 9-pin serial port on your motherboard. (Not sure if the 9-pin serial to USB adapters work)

using a reader like this, can any version Xbox get EEPROM changed out with a generic HDD unlock password? ie, a 1.6 without a mod chip/broken drive?

Yes, you would use a 1.6 eeprom & the Liveinfo Beta 3 app to edit the eeprom, (change the hdd unlock key eg...) then you can flash it to the eeprom chip.

It's what I done when I flashed my 1.1 eeprom to to my 1.6 xbox, I had to purchase a reader & then flash the correct EEPROM to it. (I also nulled the serial, changed the live key, the Mac address & nulled the password, that way all saves work across all Xbox's (new saves & all my xbox have identical EEPROMS))

1.0/1.1 can use the same 1.0/1.1 eeprom file.
1.2/1.5 can use the same 1.2/1.5 eeprom file.
1.6a/1.6b can use the same 1.6a/1.6b eeprom file.

I'm sure the 1.0/1.5 can all use the same EEPROM files, bar the 1.6 versions but better safe than sorry.

That is my plan. Soldering a 9-pin dsub eeprom reader/writer. Read and backup this from my working 1.4 xbox and dump it with ponyprog. Zero the broken eeprom and flash it with the working one. Hope this will working, because without it I can not tsop flash it. Or is there a way to tsop flash a xbox via a chip?

X3 at least in the BIOS has the ability to backup/restore EEPROM on the Xbox...

But I think it would be possible with any chip... if you put a chip on it, I'm not sure it would even boot...? Rocky?

There is a bios for flashing a corrupt eeprom with a generic one.

Flashbios 3.0.3 unauthorised

But this is only useful for Chipped/Tsoped Xbox's, due to the hdd key differences. (So unlocked hdd only)

Also I don't know if it works on v1.6 Xbox's.

The EEPROM reader is the easiest route to go, takes a couple mins to do. There are slight differences on v1.6 Xbox's, you have a 1 second window to read/write the EEPROM. (Connect the kit, turn the xbox on it will frag & reboot, as soon as it does you have 1 second to read the EEPROM before it frags again & turns off)

Took me a few tries to get it read & written back.

What I had to do with my v1.6
(I'm sure liveinfo can convert EEPROMS to different version, been a while since I used it)

Edited the EEPROM with liveinfo, nulled the hdd key, serial values. (Note all my Xbox HDDs are locked to a nulled hdd key, so I just swap them in & out)

Flashed the new eeprom a few times (kept missing the window) then read it back & compared it.

Or you could just try booting the xbox after each write.

Do you know where I can find flashbios 3.03 unauthorized? In the usual place where I load all my console stuff (Eurasia) I can get only the official version.

XBlast OS does this too. It will even flash the proper eeprom image depending on the detected Xbox motherboard revision. You can also modify the MAC address of your Xbox after restoring with the generic image in case you have multiple boxes restored with the same image. All this is located in "Tools->Edit EEPROM content" section.
They are the same EEProm images included in FlashBios unauthorized.
Both XBlast OS and FlashBios 3.0.3 unauthorized support 1.6(b) consoles.

As Rocky5 suggested, do not overwrite your EEPRom chip with those images unless your HDD is already unlocked.
You can try to repair your EEProm in XBlast OS in the "Tools->Edit EEPROM content" section but don't get your hopes up as it will only work if a single byte is corrupted.
You can try to unlock it using Master Password Unlock in XBlast OS by just selecting the "Unlock HDD" option in the HDD section. If you are lucky, the master password was set to "TEAMASSEMBLY" or "XBOXSCENE" (Are there any softmod installer that actually relock drives with a known Master Password?).

Xbins have a binary bundled with source code. search for the 256KB bin in the "image" folder of the archive.

You can also use XBlast OS 0.2Beta, you know where to find it!

EDIT: If you're not in a hurry and really need this, next release of XBlast OS will have the ability to flash EEProm from http server just like you flash a BIOS through the web browser.

Lol thanks but there's still some key features I miss:
-FTP
-Lauch XBE(impossible within cromwell without making it illegal. I don't plan on ever making this.)
-Ability to fetch data from Xbox to PC(eeprom backup and such)
-Script engine(almost done, need more testing. Basic for now but good enough to be useful.)
