Networking XBMC
Networking XBMC
Hello everyone,I am interested in networking XBMC. I already am able to view files of one Xbox using another and vise versa. The question I have is there a way to launch Xbmc of one XBox from another Xbox? The reason is for future use. I currently have 2TB HD on each but want to have different movies in each to expand my library when I eventually fill up the HD on one of them.like I mentioned early,I am able to access the movie file of one Xbox using another, but the dvd cover art does not show. Can anyone describe how this is done. Thanks

Re: Networking XBMC
I'm somewhat of a novice myself, but in the past the cover art was stored in the XBMC thumbnail cache (/E/Dashboard/UserData/Thumbnails/Video/). Therefore, it's unique to the individual unit. You were able once upon a time to use the clear button to update thumb art, automatically fetch it from IMDB, but I'm not sitting in front of a console now so I can't confirm. I guess there seems to be a few choices you could do:
-update all the cover art manually (how did you get it all originally on the host unit you spoke of?)
-copy the /UserData/Thumbnail/Video/ folder from the host to the destination to duplicate all the preset thumbnails
I know utilizing a .PNG with the extension changed to .TBN (thumbnail) has been effective for me in the past when speaking of .XBE thumbs. Set the photo name to 'default', make sure the height is no greater than 192 pixels, and change the extension. I would imagine that convention would carry over to videos as well, although if anything like .XBEs the default.tbn would have to be in a folder by itself with the associated video. Meaning each video would have to be in it's own folder.
Remember too, once the thumbnails cache from the first time viewing them in a folder, they're linked to that video. Again, specific to the .XBE, even if you change that default.tbn file it won't update the thumb, it's already cached. You'll have to dig it up in the UserData, delete it, and then when it goes to fetch again on next view it will update the thumb.
That's my novice take on it, perhaps some of it may work. I would start with the UserData folder copy. Just make sure that you're okay with both units having identical Video thumbnail data. If you have customization on one that's not on the other, you might want to sift through the folders and see which ones you're interested in copying instead of the lot.

Re: Networking XBMC
Thanks for replying, but I actually have the same movies on each Xbox. I want to have each with different movies so that I can expand my HD space. Also I have each of the Xboxes in different rooms and for that reason want to be able to access each others movie library with XBMC so that the DVD art is visable. As for the DVD art,I would scrap for them until that stopped working,so I started downloading the art from IMBD as jpg and then I would change the file extension to .tbn then FTP to Xbox. I have not updated to current build if XBMC.

Okay, so my same method would apply. You half movies A and movies B (signifying a batch on either unit). Grab the UserData from Xbox A for movies A, and add that to the UserData for Xbox B. Then Xbox B will not only have the thumbnails for the native files, but also for those you're connecting to through the network stored on Xbox A. And in converse, just swap all the A's for B's and B's for A's, and that will set you up on Xbox A to see all the thumbnails from Xbox B. Make sure you have all the thumbnails exactly the way you want them on both, I think additions you may have to copy paste each time you add a new file.

Actually, I believe they have the same videos in each right now, basically they are exact copies of each other and right now still can't see each other's dvd art.So will copying user data work? Once I determine if I can acess each other's library wit the art, then I will erase all movies on one xbox and then have different libraries on each.

I believe so, yes, the UserData copy should get you where you want to be. It won't physically be reading it from the opposite Xbox, but you'll have all the cover art stored for all those files on your existing machine.
