1.4Ghz XBOX CPU Temperature

Post by r32crazy01 »

I was wondering what CPU temperatures people with Trusty/1.4Ghz boards are getting?

I managed to get my hands on one and loving the speed increase, but concerned about the temps. Started off with the heatsink it came fitted with and idle was at 60°C . Next I tried a 80mm case fan with a higher CFM and that got it down to 55°C, then modified a heatsink I had laying around to fit and got a idle temp of 41°C.

I'm pretty happy with the current temp of around 41°C. I've been looking online for info on correct idle temp for this P3 Tualatin 1.4ghz CPU but there are so many mixed opinions.

Thanks

PJ is the only other person i know of on here with a trusty 1.4 mod, is there room for a heatsink mounted fan ? Or even mount some other slimline fans around the shielding to exhaust the heat.

If you got it down to 41C that's really good and you should just let it be and dont mess with it. Those can be tough as nails to cool down and it sounds like you nailed it with your combo.

Great, thanks for the advice. Yep I'm currently running a fan on the heatsink, must have been an extra cold day when it was at 41C because now its averaging around 45C the last few days. As Bigkidoz suggested I'll prob mount another slimline fan to get it back to around 40C hopefully.

Around 50c is perfectly exceptable. The chip will trip out the supply before it runs to hot to damage it which happens at around 72c and this is indicated by the LEDs flashing Red , orange , red and so on. I run all my machines at 50c and have done for years and never had a problem. I set auto temp at 50c and minimum fan at 2% and let the machine do it's job. A neat trick using heatsinks, (that I have never found necessary on Xboxes but have done on other equipment), is to simply attach another of the same type of heatsink but up side down to the one used and glue the interlocking fins together where they touch each other with supaglue and silicon and if your really out to get equal heat transfer between the two heatsinks, heat transfer paste where the fins aren't glued and this approach nearly doubles the surface area of the heatsink, the trade off being the surfaces that are now touching the other heatsink fins, without making it physically larger overall in size. As the heatsink is now "closed", you must make sure you have air drawn through it which is the design of the Xbox anyway other than 1.0 fan mounted designs.

Sorry if this is too off topic but I wanted to ask how much do Trusty boxes typically go for now days?

220 usd for board with ram and cpu.

your runs coooler than mine with you modified h/s but i have had no problems with the supplied setup.

My trusty board runs just a around under 60-65 with deg with standard 20% fan speed in use with a 8cm fan fitted in the back and the grills chopped and all ported out as with his recomended design (at load) it has been like that for 2 years now i guess.

it runs at 52c with the fan's basically flat out .

Is this the same Scotch from the X-S forums?

Wow, that's a hefty price, but for something so unique and rare now days I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't buy one if I had the spare cash.

Yuup. I've started coming to Xbmc4xbox more often to keep current with Xbmc and new plugins/scripts and such. A little more active than X-S's Xbmc sub-forum :)

Wow, this is very impressive! For those silly Americans out there who don't know metrics (like me) that is 106° F. :)

Could you let us know what heatsink you used and maybe post some pictures? Is this the idle temp or after a long gaming session?

I have a Trusty as well and made a custom copper heatsink with an 80mm fan. I was never able to get temps that low however. Usually idle its around 128° F (53° C) and under load for a few hours its 140° F (60° C).

Best Regards

No worries, unfortunately I don't know what brand or where to buy this heat sink from tho, my mate at work gave it to me to use.

Here are some pics. It seems to keep it between 41C - 45C idle and around 50C- 55C under load.

Although I have two Trusty 1.4ghz xboxes and one seems to run hotter for some strange reason with the same heat sink. The one that runs hotter Trusty has soldered a wire under the cpu on the underside of the pcb. The one that runs cooler does not have this wire.

Here is a pic before I got a place to dill the holes for the bolts to hold it down (black dots mark where it was drilled)

It looks like its a Cooljag heatsink. Could you take a peak and let us know what the numbers are on the fan? I could call the company and see if they could narrow down the model number that way.

Nice! Mine usually fluxuates between 120F (49C) and 140F (60C) – so a little more than yours. Do you have installed with the DVD drive and the standard fan in the back and whatnot? Also, how loud is your Xbox?

Ha, I do too! :) I'm guessing it could be the CPU. The way I understand it, each one is slightly different and won't perform exactly the same.

I can't imagine that has anything to do with it, but you never know!

Awesome phone, but if you really want to get low temperatures just water cool it, it's a little pricey but it's worth it that's what I'm doing with mine (it's going in a pc case though).

I agree water cooling would solve any temperature problems, but I love my xbox console case and I don't think there is room in it for a water cooling setup.

True there isn't a lot of space for the xbox which is why I'm using a pc case for my build, but its worth a try you may not have to get rid of your case if you find a water cool kit that's small enough, I only say this because I've seen it done before I just for get where.
