So C:\ looks like this with Hexen:
[Audio]
[dualboot]
[filler]
[fonts]
[media]
[nkpatcher]
[rescuedash]
[xboxdashdata.185ead00]
[xodash]
eeprom.bin
shadowc.img
xb0xdash.xbe
xboxdash.xbe

And E:\ looks like this with Hexen:

[Apps]
[backups]
[CACHE]
[Dashboard]
[Games]
[SAVES]
[SCREENSHOTS]
[TDATA]
[UDATA]

Brackets indicating folders of course.

Great, that all makes sense and I have now got XBMC booting as default.

Thanks for your help guys, very much appreciated!

Ordered a new HD which I will try and install using Slayers disk when it arrives, so wish me luck! :D

To do that HDD swap, just use the chimp guide (second post) that's in my signature. If you use slayer's, make sure it's 2.98.

If you need help with that while you're doing it, just PM me, and I'll be glad to help out.

You can use HeXEn to upgrade the hard drive as well....

Just to be clear, you can't use Slayers 2.97 to upgrade the hard drive on a softmodded Xbox. Your only options are HeXEn, CHIMP, or building the new disk on a PC using xboxhdm. As I understand it, Slayers 2.98 how has CHIMP, but older versions don't.

While I think about it, make sure you take a backup of your eeprom and copy it to your PC. Boot with HeXEn and FTP it from C:\eeprom.bin, and keep it in a safe place.

I usually use xboxhdm, but I've seen Mr Maj's Chimp guide. Is there a guide or tutorial for using HeXEn to upgrade a softmod hard drive?

It's on the HeXEn disc, in the form of in-line instructions. :)

It uses the Error 5 hotswap technique discovered by Ldotsfan. All I did was script it and integrate it with the rest of HeXEn. You need a softmodded Xbox, a new lockable IDE hard drive, and an external power source for the new hard drive while it is being built (a PC or an external IDE drive enclosure are ideal, but a Y power splitter on the Xbox will not work)

2.4. LXHDM Softmod Disk Upgrade
This section builds a new Kingroach softmodded disk on a softmod Xbox. Prior to use you have to follow these instructions.

2.4.1 Instructions
A. Eject the DVD tray and insert this DVD. Power off the Xbox.
B. Connect the Xbox HDD IDE cable to the new HDD.
C. Supply external power to the new HDD.
D. Power on the Xbox. You will get an error 5, which is expected.
E. Unplug the HDD IDE cable, but keep external power to the new HDD.
F. Power off the Xbox and connect the HDD IDE cable back to the old HDD.
G. Power on the Xbox. After a while this DVD will load.
H. Once UnleashX is loaded, unplug the HDD IDE cable from the old HDD and plug it into the new HDD.
I. If you have already followed these instructions, select LXHDM Option 2.4.2. Preparation, then once the menu reloads, select either LXHDM Option 2.4.3a. Build The New Disk (NTSC), or LXHDM Option 2.4.3b. Build The New Disk (PAL)

2.4.2 Preparation
Read and follow the instructions in LXHDM Option 1. Instructions before proceeding. Once UnleashX reloads, select LXHDM Option 3a. Build The New Disk (NTSC) or LXHDM Option 3b. Build The New Disk (PAL).

2.4.3 (a or b, the instructions are the same)
Build the new disk (NTSC or PAL)
WARNING. Only continue with this selection after you have read and followed all of the instructions in LXHDM Option 1. Instructions, and selected LXHDM Option 2. Preparation.
This will erase and format the hard drive currently connected to your Xbox, copy the softmod files to the drive, then launch Evox to allow you to lock the disk. Once the disk is locked you will be prompted through the rest of the installation.

Your disk is rebuilt and your softmod is now installed. Press A to launch the lock / eeprom backup menu, then follow the instructions.

HeXEn lxhdm Locking Menu
Select both menu options, in order.
1. Lock disk
2. Backup eeprom
Now remove the HeXEn DVD and turn your Xbox off then back on again.

It's that simple!

Trying to understand why/how this method works, the "magic" is somewhere between steps D, E and F, but I can't work out what it is. Do you know ?

The magic is spread around, but basically in steps D and E. At the end of step E you have an unlocked disk, powered up and ready to go, and having done any handshaking necessary with the disk controller on the motherboard. You then get the Xbox to boot normally (F, G), so it has unlocked and initiated a disk. Do the plug swap (H), then you have a controller talking to a disk it believes it has just unlocked, and a disk that has been initiated so is ready to go.

Step 2.4.2 simply reloads UnleashX to force it (UnleashX) to reread the actual disk, but because the Xbox isn't rebooting then it doesn't need to unlock the disk again.

Step 2.4.3 is where HeXEn starts to build the replacement disk, then at the end launches Evox to lock the disk.

The Hexen way of swapping the drive requires an external power supply. If you only have a Molex Y connector, Chimp works. Use whatever way that you want and find easier. Heimdall is right, and that is why I tout Slayer's 2.98, and no other version. Slayer's 2.98 is my preference, and Hexen is Heimdall's (of course, he wrote it).

"Ta-daaaaa!"

So D gets you a hard disc in an initialised state, but a BIOS/dash which isn't, so the dash is restarted with a pukka disc to get that into the right state, and then the two parts are brought together to complete the party trick. Magic!

Just tried the hexen way, when I get to the end and restart the Xbox with the new hard drive, the flubber screen comes on then just a blank screen, any ideas?

Thanks

Pete

Edit

Solved I still had the external power attached to the hard drive, powered off the hard drive attached it to the Xbox power and all is good.

Yeah I can highly recommend the method, just another question of topic, but I have coinops on another Xbox and would like to get it on the new Xbox, I've been trying to ftp it across but it keeps timing out and says there is 200,000 hrs left lol. There must be an easier method.

Thanks for any advice

Are you using FTP directly from one Xbox to the other? If so, which dash do you have on each of the Xboxes? Are you pushing or pulling?

If you are transferring from a PC, again, which dash on your Xbox, and which FTP client on your PC?

Excellent - but are you transferring Xbox to Xbox, or PC to Xbox?
