SMB file share to Server 2008R2 Domain Controller

Post by Yohisho »

Since moving my movies and music from server 2003R2 over to a domain controller running server 2008R2 I am unable to connect to any SMB shares on that new server from my xbox.. It all worked very good on 2003 non domain controller, and now will not connect with an error of cannot "connect to share" after timing out.. the previous version of XBMC I was using would list some directories but not let me play any files on the new server.. I tried the latest version of XBMC4XBOX 3.3.3 although it still has the issue.. I setup the connections in my sources.xml using a domain account, and configured the share and security as it should be on the server.. You cannot setup local accounts on a Domain Controllers , so it has to be a domain account.. I need to use a share that I can play my ISO backups, otherwise DLNA might have worked.. Is this a limitation of XBMC4XBOX? Is anyone else using SMB shares to a 2008R2 domain controller?

Windows Server 2003 is related to Windows XP, while Windows 2008 R2 is related to Windows 7. You can find a few tutorials around.

In short, I would double check the workgroup name in XBMC4Xbox Settings > Network, where you can also set the username and password.
http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/wiki/Settin ... SMB_Client

Then on the server side, obviously configure the firewall to allow domain / private connections through for File and Network Sharing.
In Network Settings, change encryption to 40/56 bit.

Well I am still battling this issue.. I looked up the docs you linked about the encryption, server 2008R2 does not have the exact settings but I found this for the security and set it on the domain policy..
http://xunyangit.wordpress.com/2011/02/ ... s-2008-r2/
I set my workgroup name as my domain name and the account I am attempting to use which does have access.. File shares are setup correctly without a firewall in between them..
I just cannot get it to connect.. on an older version of XBMC I can browse the folders but get a login box when clicking on the actual file.. the newest version I get the error right away when clicking on the share..
Any ideas why this would not be connecting to the shares after setting the above?

Normally we ask for a debug log to figure out what's going on your Xbox side.

But I'm intrigued a bit by the issue, send me a PM if you want to have a look together with TeamViewer.
There are other tools we can use on the Windows side (Process Monitor, Even Viewer) to figure out why access was denied.

@WoJ
Search the forums for similar first, then open up your own thread where you post a debug log please.

Configuring access to SMB shares from Windows XP should be more a quite straight forward, start with this first:

I thought I was clear when asking you to start to start your own thread, not to take over other people's threads when it's not quite about the same thing.

Your machine is running out of memory, you can see that in the "M:" column in bytes - open up your thread and post an entire DEBUG log at POSTBIN or XBMCLOGS, not inside of the forum post.
