emulator roms and snaps over network?
emulator roms and snaps over network?
Is there a tutorial out there that can help me set up my emulators to run roms and preview vids off of my network? I currently run all my movies off of the network, so I know that my xbox is communicating with the PC, but whenever I try to set the snapshot directory to the network it just locks up the xbox. I am pretty sure this is possible, since I recall seeing posts of people running their roms off of their networks.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
have you tried searching google ?
That would be a function of the emulator some of the madmab/xport emulators provide this feature it depends on the skin you are using and the emulator.
I don't know about coinops but I don't think it has this abilty to do remote shares.
the other option is to upgrade the hdd there is plenty of tutiorials for that around for that.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
If you are using the latest madmab edition emulators, you can simply select smb in the list of locations.
If you are using windows 8, this no longer works as easily. You will need to enter the IP address of your Xbox and gateway, the smbshare, and the smb_nameserver.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I will see if I am using the latest emulators. At this point when I choose SMB it just locks up the Xbox.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
ok, I still haven't gotten this to work. On pscxbox 2.1 there are options for network/netplay, but I have no idea which of these needs to be used and how to set it up. Does anybody know where I can find a setup guide for this emulator? I have searched but only found a bunch of dead links. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I find it easier to edit the emulator's .ini file, which is in the "SAVES/PCSXBOX" folder on the E partition.
This is an example of my network settings:
LOCAL_IP=10.1.1.2
SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY_IP=10.1.1.1
smbshare=smb://10.1.1.1/EmuXtras
smb_nameserver=LOFT-PC
Local IP is the Xbox's IP.
Gateway IP is my PC's network adapter that the Xbox is connected to.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Bigby, thanks for the help. I do have a couple of questions.
you have smbshare=smb://10.1.1.1/EmuXtras. Is emuextras where you have your roms? Does it matter what drive they are in?
you have smb_nameserver=LOFT-PC. Is LOFT-PC the name of your computer on the network?
Lastly, do I need to edit the rom_dir location, and if so what should that be?

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
EmuXras is just my root shared folder, which contain folders for Amiga, MSX, PSX and X68000. It does not matter where the folder is; this folder is on an external usb drive.
Yes, "Loft-PC" is the name of the PC on my network.
Once I have smb working, I use the emulator to point to the roms, media, movies directories.
If you are on Windows 7 or above, follow the instructions here - http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=SMB/Windows
Oh, and that version of PCSXbox - is it the redux version? That is the latest one released. It's available at emuxtras.net

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Thanks. I am going to try to get this working today. I may have a few more questions before I am done.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Alright, I got the games to show up from the network, but they refuse to load. When I launch the .bin file, it shows "loading" for about a second, then goes back to the select game screen. Sometimes it goes to the game setup screen, then when you back out of that, it goes back to the select game screen. When I try to load one off of the xbox's harddrive, everything works fine, so it looks like everything is hooked up right, just not loading off of the network. Any clue here?

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I'm fairly certain you won't get large files to play over the network. Small files yes but CD images I very much doubt it. I tried this a couple of years ago and couldn't get it to work, the network just couldn't do it quick enough.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I'm not sure about pcsxbox v21, but with pcsxbox v21 (redux) you can stream and play games over samba. Are you using the redux version?
BTW, madmab has been working on pcsxbox v22, but it is still in beta. It has much improved compatibility with many games. There is a beta section over at emuxtras where you can try it out. You will need to ask to get in to this section of the forum.

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
That is very interesting, thanks for the heads up I'll have to look into that again.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Ok, I think I have figured out why it does not work, just not sure what to do from here. I upgraded from v21 to v21(redux) and now it gives me an error message instead of just going back to the game list. When I try to load the .bin file it says "Unable to load or find data track. Check your cue file" Any idea what this means and how to fix it? I have both .bin and .cue files in each game folder.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I asked madmab about this, here is what he said:
If you still cannot get it to work, post your cue file.That error message usually means the filename listed "inside" of the cue file does not match the name of the .bin file.
If the game does not have CDDA then you can select the .bin file with no consequences. However the emu will display a warning suggesting that you select the ".cue" file.
The emu will also tell you if the game tries to access a CDDA track that is not there.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
not sure what going on. The same games work if installed onto the Xbox harddrive, but don't work over the network. I will check out the cue file and see what going on.
Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
Well, I tried to attach a .cue file but the forum will not let me. Here is what it looks like though from 3d Lemmings.cue:

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
I tried out 3D Lemmings on redux, but after the loading screen (before the title screen) it just goes to black screen.
On pcsxbox v22 beta, the game works with the new reloaded core or with core 1.5 + new cd code option.
What exactly happens when you try out other games? Do you still get the error message?

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
on every game I try it gives me the same error. If I have the game on my xbox harddrive then it works fine.
it is almost like while the xbox sees the network, it is not loading off of the network. I wonder if there is a network setting that I have off?

Re: emulator roms and snaps over network?
The only other thing I can think of is the way you have your network set up.
Is the Xbox connected to your PC or through a router?
Which OS are you using?
I have my Xbox connected to the PC (never used it through a router) and the smb share uses the IP of network adapter 2, not the IP of my PC. If this helps at all.
