Can I prep/softmod a XBOX Hard Disk in a Modhipped Xbox ?

Hi all,

I currently have a xbox v1.6 with a Xecuter 2.6ce modchip installled with 160gb hard disk. This machine works fine. My question is if I was to buy a unmodded xbox with standard 8gb drive can I remove the hard drive and put it into the modchipped xbox and use something like Xbox Auto Installer Deluxe v5 to apply a softmod then put it straight back into the unmodded xbox ?

i.e: will this mean I dont have to use a standard softmod exploit such as having an expolitable game, hot swapping drives with a PC that has IDE connectors etc..

I dont have experience of softmods, I installed the original mod chip in this box years ago and used AID boot disk to prep the hard disk.

second question..If I can softmod the original xbox 8gb HDD in my modhipped xbox, how easy is it to install a new 500gb harddisk (I have a 500gb IDE disk lying around), can I just copy the softmod files from the 8gig drive to the 500gb drive and swap the drives ? Or is it not that straightforward ?

no. The reason being the hard drive will be locked. You can only unlock it with the EEPROM from that xbox, which you can only obtain by soft or hard modding said xbox.

Will an installer disc read the eeprom off the hdd and lock it that way ? What will work is if you setup the hdd in your chipped console and hotswap while the both consoles and hdd's are powered up.
So you prep the new hdd and boot up the unmodded console and hotswap the new hdd while its still powered on, once its swapped over you can shutdown which will lock the new hdd.

Cheers guys, I've just watched a couple of softmodding videos on youtube looks pretty straightforward applying the softmod and I have an old PC lying around with IDE onboard so I might give the softmod method a go instead. Just ordered a softmod kit with controller to USB female cable, original splinter cell exploitable game and compatible USB pen drive.
Now just got to download SID ISO from a torrent and I should be good to go..

Well the EEPROM is a chip on the motherboard that must be read with a program that writes the EEPROM.bin file to the hard drive.

What will work is if you setup the hdd in your chipped console and hotswap while the both consoles and hdd's are powered up.
So you prep the new hdd and boot up the unmodded console and hotswap the new hdd while its still powered on, once its swapped over you can shutdown which will lock the new hdd.

I guess that could work but if you weren't careful you'd end up with an unlocked drive and no way of locking it again.

With the splinter cell exploit you do not need a PC with an IDE port, just a way to copy the exploit files to the USB drive. You also do not need SID, although it might be able to format the new hard drive for you(I've never used it).
If the non chipped xbox is not a 1.6 I recommend flashing the TSOP

I was going to use the PC and IDE port to prep the larger 500 gig I want to install. The softmod video I watched had the following steps:

- Softmod original XBOX (8gb drive) using splinter cell exploit.
- Use SID to backup EEPROM and C: Drive.
- FTP EEPROM and backed up softmod to PC.
- Use PC and XBOXHDM to create bootable iso with EPROM and softmod files .
- Boot PC with XBOXHDM ISO created in previous step, with larger hard drive connected to IDE and prep/format drive, copy across backed up EEPROM and softmod files.
- Lock Drive with XBOXHDM and install into XBOX.

Is there an easier method which doesnt involve using a PC with IDE port ?

a far far easier method well in my opinion anyway. Is the unchiped xbox below v1.6? and are you handy with a soldering iron?

I havent acquired the unmodded xbox yet, but I was looking at getting a crystal XBOX so it's probably likely to be a 1.6 ! I take it you were thinking TSOP flash by bridging some points on the board if it was below 1.6 ?#

I'm average with soldering I have installed xecuter chips in the past on v1.6 xboxes with the LPC rebuild board and pin header install, and some other bits and bobs over the years...but I wouldnt say I'm an great at soldering by any means..

yep, its really easy. If you've installed chips it shouldn't be a problem.
of course that's impossible if it's a 1.6
Best wait until you get the new xbox and then decide what to do

yeah but the EEPROM will only be on the hard drive if the xbox has been softmodded or hardmodded.

Managed to acquire a crystal xbox,just awaiting delivery now should be with me by the end of the week.. Also have a Softmod kit ready (original splinter cell game, controlller to USB adaptor, compatible 256meg USB pen drive with game saves ). If it's not a 1.6 I may look into TSOP flash otherwise it will be softmod time..

Recieved the xbox and went for a softmod using splinter cell exploit. Then backed up the EEPROM and C and E drives. FTP'd them to PC and built an ISO with xboxhdm 1.9 .
Used an old PC with IDE interface and built a spare 320gb Maxtor Diamonmd Max drive I had lying around, locked the drive . Installed the 320gb drive in the XBOX and it booted up first time with no errors... But straight into stock MS Dash not Unleash X ..
Anyway because the gamesave exploits were on the drive as I backed up the E: drive and burnt it to the xboxhdm CD I removed and reinstalled the softmod and UnleashX dashboard.
Everything looks good, I just got to get xbmc FTP'd across and Coinops5 full R14, then i'll be sorted

Do you know what, I didnt even check the version of the box ! I just checked with the AID Disk and it is a V1.6 Xbox. The other Crystal XBox I have is also a V1.6.
