set Xbox as a FTP server

Post by onthatB0MBSHELL »

Hi,
I would like to set my Xbox up as a server,
My son lives 40 miles away, we would like our boxes to connect someway over ftp, so we can transfer files between them,
or i can update his box remotely.
hope you understand what i wish to achieve
If someone can tell me if its possible, and if so how to set it up.
Thanks

I have not tried this... but it seems to me since a server already runs on the xbox it is a simple process of going into your internet router and forwarding port 21 to tthe static IP you set up for your xbox. If it was me, I would change the port to something other than 21 and I would change the default user / password since it would be accessible by the world internet. Of course this would mean forwarding the new port number.

If anyone sees I am in error please correct.

Thanks psychotron, you've pretty much confirmed what I thought should work. Often thought about trying this out myself - might use my parents xbox as the test subject next time I'm there :)

You're not. I've done it, it works just fine. As you say, it's alredy an FTP server, all you need to do is open and forward router port.
