HDD <=> Xbox Compatibility List - softmod

Post by Tomcio »

Hello guys,

I have one Xbox Crystal laying under my TV. I softmodded it, and connected to Internet via cable. Of course I have installed XBMC4XBOX 3.2. Now, I want to have more space available on my Xbox, so I want to replace original, 8 GB HDD with something more. I read recently, that not every hard disk can be locked. Is there any list with compatible drives, working with softmodded X's?

As society, you are doing great work! Thanks for all answers!

Regards, Tomcio

PS: I have Xbox 1.6

I think the list is a little dated now but you can find it here. From experience you've got to be pretty unlucky to find one that isn't lockable but they do exist and it's not usually something you'll find on the official specs of the HDD. I've used WD, Seagate, Maxtor, Fujutsu... loads of different ones over the years and only once did I encounter one that wouldn't lock. If you're going for a SATA HDD the hardest thing to find is working IDE-SATA adapters (there aren't many that work on xbox). If you're happy with a maximum of 500gb then I'd always recommend an IDE HDD but if you require more then it's going to have to be a SATA with an adapter.

I know from experience that, that list should be taken with a grain of salt. Becuase I have a hdd in my xbox that is considered un lockable in that list. ldotsfan's updated version of chimp locked it up tight though with no problems. So use it as a guide but not the definitive end all source.

Xbox 1.6

I have just tried modding with a WD20EARX drive (2tb sata 3, GREEN model)

Will setup with chimp (from hdd/fatx) no problem. Locks and unlocks fine....

Don't use one tho..
With it being Green, it does not spin up fast enough for the Xbox to register.
Been trying for about 2 months with different methods to no avail

Sold it and got a Seagate 160Gb ST3160212ACE (ide) from CEX again. Worked straight away. Only £5. Other WD model above was from here too.

Just need to fill it now ;)

My local CEX store

EDIT - Just checking for you to see if CEX do international shipping. Will post here when i get reply from them. OK?
