System clock wrong- lithium battery problem?

When I turn my XBOX on and use an emulator I get a message saying system clock not set. I went into system settings and the clock was set as Date 05/12/8907 time: 18:49.
I changed it to correct date but everytime I turn the XBOX on the clock goes back to that weird date.
What's happened? Has the lithium battery on the motherboard run out? Has anybody had this problem before? The XBOX is now over 10 years old.
Also, does this effect the playback of video in XBMC as I've had problems with the xbox just shutting down when ever I play a video.
Thanks.
