XBMC4Xbox

Hi guys, new here

Did something really stupid the other day, I deleted my main XBMC install, so now I have no dash. I have a 1.6 with an x3 (CE i think) so I can get into the x3 bios. I'm using FileZilla to try to FTP XBMC over, but I can't because I get this error:

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

I have tried putting the HDD in an external case, and directly to my motherboard but my PC won't recognize it.
I think it's my router that's causing the trouble, it's a BT Home Hub 3 on Infinity.
I haven't got any USB ports on the XBOX, and the DVD is temperamental.

Any advice would be awesome. Cheers.

Oh yeah, the HDD isn't the stock one, it's a Seagate 320GB.

Have you checked your X3 ftp settings to make sure that it's configured correctly?

Have you tried cold booting Hexen or similar?

Hexen worked for me when I did the same earlier this year!

Easily done when you don't follow instructions, wife says it's a bloke thing but what does she know!!

Heimdall is the author of Hexen, which is an engineering disc that saves folk like me and thee from being daft twats permanently.

Google for it, as I'm not sure if it has a proper home.
If you get stuck, shout and I'll (with Heimdall's blessing) put a copy up somewhere.

Found the link to Hexen, cheers for that. Unfortunately my PC's DVD drive is ancient and can't write to DVD-RW's

Anyone know any basic stuff that can go wrong with x3 FTP Settings? Here's the stuff I can change:

DHCP:
Set Static IP:
Set Subnet:
Set Gateway IP:
Set DNS1:
Set DNS2:

I've got DHCP disabled on my router, and in the x3 settings.
The Static IP in the x3 Settings are the same as the one in my router settings.
The Subnet and Gateway IP are the same in the x3 settings/my router.
I haven't set DNS's though, maybe that's why?
The Gateway IP is set just outside my routers IP range, is that right?

What do you mean by the settings are the same as your router? Your static IP can't be the same as your router (two network devices can't have the same IP). This would be much easier for you if you enable DHCP. If you can't use DHCP, then I guess try the following settings.

Static IP: an IP on the same subnet as your router without conflicting with other devices
Subnet: I think they mean netmask, which is usually 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP: your router's IP

The DNS settings shouldn't matter, but you can fill then in with your router's IP.

And dont use DVD-rw. Ive never seen an XBOX able to read one. DVD-r is best to use. If you can only use a CD-r its pretty easy to make a boot disc.

1)Download UnleashX and create a folder in it for the XBMC.
2)Copy in XBMC and the evoxdash.xbe required for it to run as dash.
3)Use CXBOX-Tools or similar to turn the UnleashX folder into an ISO
4)Burn to disc and coldboot the XBOX with it
5)Use its filemanager to copy the evoxdash.xbe to the root of C and the XBMC folder to the root of E
6)Remove the disc and reboot, it should now boot straight to XBMC

Again, cheers for the help guys. Since I couldn't get the network settings to work, or find any usable CD-R's, I tried installing another FTP client. It worked! I'm now using the free version of Core FTP, which didn't require any setup besides the Static IP, and admin/password.

Got another problem now though. Since I've wiped my x3 bios a few times trying to sort this mess out, I can't get it to actually boot to XBMC. I've got it installed in F/Apps/XBMC. I just unzipped the XBMC 3.2 download and placed it there, what else do I need to configure in the bios?
I've noticed that the x3 bios is set up to look for a file called xbmc.xbe, yet there doesn't seem to be one in my XBMC folder?

You'll need to either change the bios config to match the path and filename to your dash or move your dash and change the filename to match your bios.

The only options in the x3 bios (or at least on the build I'm currently running) are to set the dash drive letter, and rename the dash file names it looks for.

So, I managed to get XBMC working by setting the quicklaunch option in the bios to go to F:/Apps/XBMC.default.xbe
But still, I don't want to have to hold a trigger every time I boot up

So, I've tried telling the x3 bios to look for default.xbe on the F drive, but still no result.
The latest thing I've tried is moving the XBMC folder to C:, and told the bios to look for xbmc.xbe, then defautl.xbe, but I get an error message from XBMC when it boots up.

I think if I had a better understanding of the files I could get this sorted. Why is there no xbmc.xbe in my XBMC folder? Has that just been changed to default.xbe recently?

One last thing, I'd prefer to have XBMC on my F: drive if I can, since it's the biggest partition on my drive.

Sorry if this was long winded, just want to give as much info as I can.

Finally found a solution

I found some links on Google on people trying to make XBMC their main dash, and got my method from there. I downloaded XBE Shortcut Maker 1.0 and created a xbmc.xbe shortcut to go on my xbox's C drive, which then points it too where my XBMC install is.

Anyways thanks for all the help guys, this has definitely been a learning experience haha.

The inability to set the full path to the dash is part of what keeps me from using an X3 bios full time (the other reason is boot up time). By needing to use a shortcut file, it makes it so that if you delete the dashboard that the shortcut points to (like when upgrading XBMC), if you don't get a chance to replace the dashboard before the next power cycle (power cuts out, Xbox freezes, etc), then the shortcut file will now point to nothing but the X3 bios won't know that and will try to boot from it anyway. I prefer to use X2 5035 as my everyday bios, which lets you set the full path to the dash (and it boots up faster, at least with the flubber disabled).

My 3X is booting from E:\XBM\default.xbe... I Agree, i hate that too.. but that's not really a problem.
You don't "need" to use a shortcut for that.

I totally agree with AZImmortal, X3 bios is not a really good daily driver for the living room and such..
On the other side, its an excellent bios for a workbench Xbox, thats all.

Some people would probably shoot AZImmortal and me alive for recommending 5035 or 5003 on a chip... but I agree with im lol.
I cant let any of my customer flash their bios to simply change some colors... But most of them can do with ind-bios helped by XBtool Color BIOS Preset Maker 1.0b (same as X2 5035)

I didn't know that you could set the path at all for X3. Do you put it in the same string as the filename? Like this?

Yep, hold the white button while booting the Xbox to access the X3 Live Config then:
X3 Config Live > Customize X3 Bios > Dashboard Filenames: Set it to "XBM\default.xbe" (without the quotes)
Also make sure to adjust "Dashboard Boot Priority" and "Dashboard Boot Drive" to your need.
