ok, I have windows media center set up on a win 8.1 machine. I would like to be able to watch tv on my original xbox in the back room. However, when I run the setup, it says it can't find the extender. Is it because of software incompatibilities or is there some secret I am not aware of. I also remember a post somewhere where someone set up the HDHomerun streams through a UPnP setup. Maybe that is what I need to do. Any thoughts?

It was a thing. Apparently it came out originally for us with a PC running Windows MCE(based on XP IIRC). So Media Center on XP or MCE are your best bet. Windows Vista and beyond have fundamental differences I'm sure. The Xbox360 works as and extender for Vista and beyond.
I'm not using it anymore but all I've ever used it for is as a TV Tuner. I didn't set up an extender more than one time, and never have done it with the Xbox. I could try but I think I'll wait and see if somebody knows for certain.
EDIT:
Here's an article citing the older generation extenders being incompatible with Vista [and later].

Here's a tutorial on setting up with the XP-based Media Center:

Look into a MythTV setup. There is at least some support in XBMC4Xbox for it.
